So it's farewell to the History subject area at the University of Hertfordshire, not the first nor the last to go. One of the best departments in the country, just extinguished like a snap of the fingers. Think of the waste. (1/2)

Seeing all these horrible people including Kemi Badenoch eulogising Rod Liddle as this beloved figure, is weirdly bringing me back to the Jason Arday drama. It may sound tenuous, but I think a real problem in society is that certain groups always get punished, while others don't.

Lowest number of graduate job openings since 2020. This is a core labour market problem that universities cannot fix, but routinely get the blame for.

Well this is a fun game. I’ve long thought Walter Benjamin, Fernando Pessoa, and Mina Loy all had ADHD (and that this was, indirectly, a reason I was drawn to them, long before I was diagnosed). Who wants to add to the list?

Liverpool John Moores University, where Jason Arday got his PhD, is currently offering £203 as a PhD examiner’s fee. Their PhD’s should have a maximum length of 80,000 words. That’s a novel of about 300 pages. Let’s assume it takes you 10 hours, between reading, checking citations and making notes.

I accept that it *might* be a plea to the public, who could also believe in this BS. But it appears to show little solidarity. Oh yes, don't worry about the regional universities. Never mind what they do for the students and towns there. No, it's the top, the "premier" ones we need worry about!

I feel sorry for the guy. From what I've seen he's raised some £ for charity, he goes and speaks to school kids about doing their best, and he hasn't SA'd, harassed or bullied anyone. And he's getting slaughtered.

If sb says “I wasn’t good enough to be professional” and you go off on a rant about how they claimed to be a professional, that is absolutely on you regardless of anything else they’ve done or said.

These are the actual claims Jason Arday has made about his football and snooker accomplishments. Somehow this has been transmuted into “he claimed to have played football and snooker professionally”.

What the hell, I’ll share this on my own timeline, too. My thoughts, such as they are, on the case of Jason Arday, a scholar I had the great pleasure to meet when we were both at Roehampton.

Martin, the guy had a tumour while he was a PhD student. That will surely have affected the thesis. Plagiarism & mediocre research are both more common in academia than we like to admit. It just so happens the RW media has no interest in investigating it when it’s by prominent white scholars. 1/

2 questions for those fretting about Jason Arday: 1. Are you willing to apply the same scrutiny to the PhDs of all other Cambridge profs to weed out plagiarists? I'm *certain* you'll find others, most of whom have come the standard academic route. If yes, crack on, let us know when you're done.

The right wing press is attacking Jason Arday, afaik britain's only Black autistic professor, for plagiarism in his PhD. There is evidence of copying passages which should be corrected; but I think this is very common, its just that nobody notices or complains if you're white. Solidarity with Jason.
