I have, with my own eyes, watched my tax dollars in the form of missiles as they hit buildings inhabited by civilians. I'd much prefer subsidizing a grocery story I don't use.

At a recent social event a man found out I have a philosophy phd so kept trying discuss whether AI is conscious. Eventually I said AI companies just fund philosophers to work on that to distract us from all the harm they do. He looked annoyed and steered straight back to whether AI is conscious.

Stuart Hall pointed out once that the left-liberal response to antiracism in the UK has been one of virtue and moral purity rather than systemic analysis and resistance. That is really showing here. This is part of a wider strategy. If you want to individualise it, you're playing their game.

Saw a telegraph article earlier arguing the greens should no longer let polanski run his own social media and I suspect they just don't want people hearing important truths like this from a politican (and would rather we are fed generic PR slop instead)

We must use every lever to end the genocide, end the occupation, stop illegal settlements, and deliver justice for Palestinians. Words don't save lives. Actions do.
They should read my book and learn that this is a false dichotomy and its both. If anyone knows Channel 4 please send them a copy!

there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5

"Social construct" might be a philosophical term. But philosophers use it rarely, or at least carefully. Well, at least the philosophers that I tend to interact with. Social scientists, however, are mesmerised by the notion. It's a mess. bsky.app/profile/oluf...

The way AI is spoken about as having "disobeyed" (or "cheated", "lied", etc.) already seems to assume that is has agency (and maybe consciousness). Perhaps its my ignorance but i don't see why any of this behaviour is fundamentally different from, say, a glitch in a programme.

What's a good text to speech app specifically for people who can't speak but can type and want to use it for communicating with people? I know the various text to speech apps for reading text like speechify but they don't work so well for quick conversation.
I do think LLMs under capitalism are basically the privatisation of what Marx called the general intellect, a particualrly horrific form of intellectual and epistemic commons enclosure. All the headlines about AI becoming conscious and wiping us out is just a distraction from that.

When work aligns with corporate interests much greater sins than this are entirely forgiven and unremarked upon by the press. They have been desperate to construct a "DEI hire not up to scratch" story here since the US press did their version

There is evidence of copying passages which should be corrected; but I think this is very common, its just that nobody notices or complains if you're white. Solidarity with Jason.

Wondering, ethically, how a postdoc should acknowledge funding if the principle grantholders were bad enough to make the postdoc too ill to work, and they therefore were able to publish despite rather than due to working on the grant. I do think this kind of thing happens a lot in academic fifedoms.
Some legit concerns about specific failings aside, Mamdami is just a whole different calibre of politican.

One of Rupert Lowe's most used slogans "I don't care" was actually a slogan of Mussolini's Brownshirts ("me ne frego"). He seems to be using it as a dogwhistle to more dedicated fascist activists, while knowing most of his followers, who do not consider themselves far right, won't know the history.
