Definitely a great idea to constantly change fictional dates so every sf story remains safely in the future. New editions of 1984 should be set in 2062 but with nothing else changed

O'Leary)@bowiesongs.bsky.social · 23h agoin re Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" (which, in the original Martian Chronicles, occurs on today's date), I didn't realize the very first published version of the story, in Collier's magazine, was set in April 1985. (the current edition of Martian Chronicles now sets it in 2057).
One of the most famous philosophical problems involves the deaths of innocent people on trolley tracks and yet some of you still want to replace cars with mass transit? Unconscionable.

A similar phrase not recorded until 1980 although the physical gesture dates to the 1960s (and was preceded by "shadow conducting" of orchestras since at least the 1930s)

For some reason it just occurred to me that I have no idea what musical theater is like in non-anglo countries, other than, I assumed (correctly) US and UK shows in translation. Fortunately someone on The Last Good Site on the Internet wondered the same thing a few years ago

It's just more that people outside the industry think about the departments they know of but obviously ignore departments whose roles are unknown to them. The sheer amount of collaboration that goes into making films is shocking.
Joni Mitchell thread #6 starts with another album I haven't listened to much. It's an improvement over the last few. Come in from the Cold is quite lovely, as is The Only Joy in Town. Overall the lyrics are starting to feel more sophisticated again, although wtf is up with The Windfall? Apparently..

One thing that makes Dr. Who great (when it is) is the rule that the Doctor never* uses violence. Every final confrontation with a villain is truly exciting because you don't know how the Doctor is going to pull it off. In a superhero movie, no matter which superhero, you know it's gonna be punching
Daniel Radosh@radosh.bsky.social · 4d agoMy problem w/recent superhero movies — Superman is a perfect example — is that even when there are a lot of fun *moments* the movie seems much more interested in lore (as opposed to genuine worldbuilding) that I could give two shits about, and then the last 30 minutes is just a cgi punchfest
The thing about all the great buzz for the new Spider-Man movie is that there was also great buzz for the last Spider-Man movie, which was, you know, fine

I thought I'd ferreted out every song about Bob Dylan but this one was hiding in plain sight. Bob sells out is probably the most common theme in my playlist but this one written after his 2014 Chrysler ad, is one of the best of that genre.
