Watched The Odyssey at the multiplex yesterday and the packed theatre actually made me a tad emotional. I live in a fairly small city, and most of the time there’s barely half a dozen people in a screening. The waitress at the restaurant nearby said it’s the busiest week they’ve had in years.
For most of my life, my pinnacle (as yet unfulfilled) relationship goal has been to have my hair washed on the deck of a boat like in DEAD CALM. RIP to the wonderful Sam Neill who played bad guys and good guys, but who had a specialist talent for making decency the sexier option, even vs Billy Zane.

Many, many great Sam Neill films, but the first to come to my head this morning is the lovely Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Playing the silent grump is a trap to lesser actors, but Neill plays Hec with this palpable undercurrent of tenderness that struck me deeply at the time and still does, now.

Every time the World Cup comes along, I feel an urge to pick a Premier League team to support and then am brutally reminded of how maddeningly expensive stadium tickets are in the UK. We’ve seen better days in Brazil, sure, but I still managed to watch my team at the stadium every single week.
