I write about movies. Sometimes I talk about them. Usually just write. Award-winning screenwriter for what it's worth. Film instructor at the University of Colorado, Denver, but ridiculous social media presence definitely my own. http://walterchaw.com

I wrote about my years filming with ex-wino turned chessmaster John Healy, exploring his bitter exile from the British literary world despite writing a runaway bestseller: www.rte.ie/culture/2026...
In the arena - John Healy's long road back from literary oblivion
Ahead of a special IFI screening of his acclaimed documentary Barbaric Genius, filmmaker Paul Duane reflects on the life and literary legacy of the film's subject, Grass Arena author John Healy.

Back in 1988 John Healy published his memoir The Grass Arena about his life as a wino turned chessmaster. This August the sequel, The Glass Cage, is published. To coincide with this @irishfilminstitute.bsky.social screen my 2011 documentary about Healy. Please share if you can ifi.ie/film/from-th...
I pine for the 1980s when every movie Dennis Quaid was in was just an excuse for Dennis Quaid to take his shirt off. He was our Matthew McConaughey. Awright, awright, awright.
George Wendt plays a heavy in DREAMSCAPE so whenever there's a cut to him, ominous music plays, and I'm sorry but that just makes me giggle.
How're Roar Uthaug's COLD PREY slasher flicks treating me? Very well, thank you.
William Woods' THE OUTER THREAT feels like a Spielberg film. A proper companion to both VAST OF NIGHT and MIDNIGHT SPECIAL.
I like the part where the Texas-born Irish woman puppetmasters a team of Asians. That's pretty cool.
It's been reported that Grace Chang, Hong Kong's preeminent Mandarin screen diva of the 50s, passed away this afternoon, one day shy of her 93rd birthday. Watch Mambo Girl and The Wild, Wild Rose to see her at the height of her powers.
Watching this Chinese flick on dub and every time this kid talks, I'm reminded of Jordan Peele's weirdo kid voice on "Key & Peele." I don't hate it.
Really liked MOTOR CITY. It's like a Craig Zahler film you don't have to feel weird about watching.
I just subscribed to this block list, and I really appreciate the public service provided here
I started getting followed by some "film festivals" and "writing festivals" and thought "oh, these are cool!" Then I looked a little closer. They're all part of a network that preys on writers, charging us for reviews, and feeding our stuff into slop generators. So I made a list.👋🏻🖕🏻😠
There's a little Fred Flintstone to Alan Ritchson. This is not a complaint, mind you, just an observation.
HOWARD THE DUCK turns 40 today. A true calamity that inspired nothing except maybe the most personal review I ever wrote. filmfreakcentral.net/2021/08/howa....

July had three bright spots: I got to hang out w/@kikutowne.bsky.social, @jimbyrkit.bsky.social & @catsolen.bsky.social. I worked way too much & watched 100 movies for a 2026 total of 573. Best 1st watches: SAMURAI & THE PRISONER (2026), ROSE OF NEVADA (2026), EVIL DEAD BURN (2026), SNACK SHACK,
With the release of SPIDER-MAN BRAND NEW DAY it's the perfect time, Sony, to please release MORBIUS back in theaters. It's Morbin' time!
The one time I wrote for them, an editor gave me the snarky note to resist referring to Bruce Lee as "little dragon" because it was patronizing and, my friends, "little dragon" is the stage name he gave to himself. Also, it's not patronizing to the Chinese. They ignored my next several pitches. Yep.
Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:
I've seen a lot of fellow writers post stories about getting shafted. Most don't name the outlet, and I don't blame them one bit. Times are terrible. You could still wind up needing a gig from the place. So I deeply admire Jason for having the guts to name Vulture and give the details.

This happened to me with Vulture last year. I was hired to cover a day-long TV event (on a Sunday, no less) here in Nashville. I spent 8 hours at the event, then went home and wrote a 1500-word piece overnight because they wanted to post it the next day. Then the editor kept putting me off. (cont.)

Whenever people like @www.johnbleasdale.com and @kierlajanisse.bsky.social mention my MIRACLE MILE book, or anything I've written at all, I confess I cry. Hard. I'm stoic in most but fragile in some ways and being recognized by people I love and respect destroys me instantly. Thank you guys.
