Check out our Cambridge Elements with @raschwartz.bsky.social available online for free until June 3rd: doi.org/10.1017/9781... In it, we build a new analytical framework to understand new forms of democratic erosion in the region.
Lucas Perelló and Rachel Schwartz explain how an opposition party that swept into power in 2021 was swept out by voters just four years later after failing to deliver on its promises and exhibiting the same authoritarian leanings of its predecessor. muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/a...
🎙️ In our new podcast produced in collaboration with @jodemocracy.bsky.social, @raschwartz.bsky.social discusses how logistical failures, elite conflict, and long-term democratic erosion combined to the uncertainty surrounding the elections in Honduras. 🇭🇳🇭🇳🗳️ 🎧 Listen now: 👉 tinyurl.com/yk339tbx
When do corrupt incumbents agree to independent international anti-corruption commissions? This article finds that government insiders and civil society orgs can work together and leverage their agenda-setting power & expertise to ensure the autonomy of hybrid anti-corruption initiatives.

🇭🇳 🗳️ Wondering what's going on with Honduras' election chaos? Me too! In any case, I've tried to make sense of how the country arrived at the current moment and what might be in store in this essay for @jodemocracy.bsky.social 👇
Days after the election and still no one knows who the next president will be. Even worse, none of the likely winners offer much hope for the country’s democracy. Read "Why Honduras Is Facing Election Chaos":
Guy who allegedly said that he wants to “shove the drugs up the noses of the gringos” and was convicted for systematically colluding in major drug trafficking operations, pardoned. 80+ people accused of drug running in the Caribbean w/o evidence, extrajudicially executed. Let that sink in.
So the US is fighting against drug trafficking by freeing a guy convicted of using the presidency to facilitate large-scale drug trafficking. Makes total sense. What JOH ally got in Trump's ear to set this up? www.pbs.org/newshour/wor...

In 2012, I got to clip a lapel mic to Jimmy Carter’s tie. I did a very bad job. And just as you’d expect, he was exceedingly kind to me despite this. May his memory be a blessing.
