A great paragraph from A British Childhood by Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

On the BBC, adults and children's programs were kept apart by scheduling. Children's Hour started just after school finished and ended at the Six O'Clock News. But there was a five-minute warning, a buffer zone, between the children's shows and the news - usually filled with a Czech cartoon or The Magic Roundabout. I can still remember my delighted shock when an episode of the latter started with Dougal the dog looking right down the camera lens and saying, in a world-weary tone, 'Hello, just switched on for the news, have we?' Probably the first time I'd seen someone breach the fourth wall. Its downbeat cynicism was electrifying. As though Dougal had seen the future adult in me. A guard dog at the gates of Grown-Up Land.
