Countdown to @kickstarter Tomorrow, the campaign launches for the fourth and final book in my dark epic fantasy saga. Although the retailer release will follow at the start of 2027, this really feels like the closing chapter on my saga with this story and these characters #booksky

Countdown to @kickstarter.com 2 years since Design of Darkness was unleashed upon the world. It's been a whirlwind of cover reveals, book signings, giveaways, dancing, and many many videos. #booksky #fantasy

Countdown to @kickstarter.com 3 Nations in Conflict At the center of The Tides That Reign are three nations locked in conflict: Kailon, Nokara, and Faron. #booksky

Countdown to @kickstarter.com 4 books in The Tides That Reign!! This dark fantasy series melds the intimate characterizations and political intrigue of The Poppy War by RF Kuang w/ the Southeast Asian mythological influences and lush worldbuilding of The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez

Countdown to @kickstarter.com 5 favorite moments from the publishing journey! Big or small, these will forever be the markers that stick with me as I leave The Tides That Reign behind. #booksky

Countdown to @kickstarter.com 6 manuscripts that shaped me I've written a lot of books. Like, A LOT of books. But here are six that made a huge impact on my storytelling beginning with my very first completed novel. #booksky

Hand-bound copies of books titled "The House" and "The House Two". Text beneath reads "6 manuscripts that shaped me. In seventh grade, I finished my first novel, 'The House.' One of my teachers helped me bind it so I could submit to the Young Authors Faire. Afterward, I figured out my own method for binding using cardboard and hole punches. I even wrote two sequels, though I only have the second."

A tattered notebook with a hand drawn cover reading "The Necklace, Into the Castle, Book I" Text beneath the image reads "I followed it with the first what was meant to be a trilogy titled 'The Necklace' (notice any carry over to 'Tides'?) At the time, I wasn't allowed to watch Lord of the Rings. So this was, essentially, my approximation of what that series was about.

Four unbound manuscripts stacked on top of one another. The text reads "Another seminal piece of my writing journey was a 4-part series called 'Knives' from high school. Written like a tv show with episodes I brought to friends, it borrowed heavily from ABC's Alias, but taught me so much about story structure and writing action sequences. There were 46 episodes."

An unbound manuscript held in front of jungle wallpaper. The text reads "At the end of high school, I transformed my first novel into what I believe was my first truly original work. After fleshing out the story with a more complex protagonist and a nonchronological structure, I took a trashy horror novel and elevated it with deeper themes and purposeful prose."

Countdown to @kickstarter.com 7 days to go and 7 years since the journey began! I started outlining The Tides That Reign in April 2019 and it quickly took over my life - world building, character development, intertwining narratives all spilled out of me with obsessive fervor #booksky

a mock polaroid with a photo of the Design of Darkness manuscript on a black metal mesh table beside a cappuccino in a white mug. Overlay text reads "7 years in the making"

a mock polaroid of an open manuscript beside a black and white checkerboard mug. Overlay text reads "7 years in the making"

Incredibly humbling when Kindle Publishing is like "based on your release history, your upcoming book doesn't qualify for a pre-order link" Like didn't even know that was a possibility 😆

Introducing The Tides That Reign Omnibus

Heyo! I don't know about you, but I am absolutely ready for cozy season to descend upon us as we near the end of the summer. Not only am I a big fan of cold days and rainy skies, but I'm particularly fond of these last few months of the year for the change it atmosphere they bring. I love putting up spooky decorations, listening to Halloween music, and forcing my husband to watch horror films with me. The fact that that almost directly transitions into holiday season (at least in this household) makes it even better.

I have an auntie named Boots and it was her birthday, so now the family chat sounds like the Internet with everyone saying "Happy Birthday Boots"

Countdown Begins + The Author Corner with J.D.L. Rosell! Heyo! We are officially in the waning days of summer. The nights are getting longer, the heat is breaking (wishful thinking, I know) and that can only mean one thing. It's almost time for the 'In the Wake of the Blade' Kickstarter launch! I…

I won't lie. I'm on the edge of my seat as this one draws near. The Tides That Reign series means so much to me, and my entire outlook on it has transformed drastically from receiving the acquisition letter from the former publisher, to taking control of its publishing future, to the final book release.

If you see this, you’re legally obligated to quote with your favorite Star Wars character (So mine probably needs some explanation, as yes it's Anakin but SPECIFICALLY on Clone Wars, where he got all the character development Lucas never gave him.)

Book Four Proofs Arrive!

Heyo! I know we've still got quite a big chunk of summer to go (and here in the California central valley we'll be trudging through at least two more months of 90+ degree weather) but the second half of August always gets me in the mood for Autumn. I don't know if it's because all the big stores are pushing cute and cozy Halloween decor, or if it's that I'm simply fed up with the heat, but I get into Fall mode way too early. Big sweaters come to mind, warm spiced candles, wearing pants...

In just a week, I'm already over halfway to my £9000 goal for my immigration fees!! Feeling so grateful and loved. If you can donate and/or share, it'd mean the world to me. On average every GoFundMe share = £50 in donations so it'd be a real help. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

August Check-In: Projects, Progress, & Summer Goals

Musings... Preparing the Kickstarter for the final book in The Tides That Reign series over a year after finishing its first draft has put me in a contemplative state of mind. Contemplative, of course, serving as a euphemism for "frequently dissolving into fits of panic about how it will be received." It's far easier to build up an epic fantasy yarn than it is to close one - a widespread concern made apparent by just how many beloved works fall flat in their final chapters. But rather than focusing on the stories whose endings evoked disappointment, frustration, or even anger; I like to highlight those many sagas that came to a satisfying end.
