"you are the shadow on the cave wall of a grungler" - @spidermansion.bsky.social

I have so many thoughts on this, as a professional software engineer who has bopped around different industries.

Resharc@reshar.cc · 5d ago

the whole paint.net debacle is an interesting microcosm of a wider problem in software engineering, where developers seem to have no interaction with their users or put any effort into understanding them, and end up being surprised when they piss them off

Sometimes it really knocks me for a loop how powerful AI tools are. The prompt that preceded this: "create two local DBs from this dump file, then run two different versions of this customer import script, stand up a these four apps, and then walk through testing the customer in my browser".

This is originally about AI-related slurs like clanker, but it describes a group of people eho confuse me to no end. Why do you need to look for an acceptable target for your abuse, when the fascists are right there? I like hurling abuse too, and Elon Musk actually deserves it! So do Republicans!

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social · 2w ago

One problem is that the class of leftist who are defending the terms are generally about two steps removed from the far right themselves. They find targeted abuse exhilarating but exist in a community where race is mostly a forbidden basis for it.

Nothing has prevented me from getting Instagram more than the insistence that you're not allowed to see content on Instagram through a mobile browser, you MUST use their app. It would be useful to see the occasional post, but fuck off I'm not making an account just to see one thing a month.

I joined a mythic raiding guild last tier, when I swapped from mop classic to retail. There's a guy I play with who is very good and very pleasant, but has 13 alt characters that he maxes his great vault on every week. It is the most unemployed thing I've ever seen and I have no idea how he does it.

pro or anti data-center is a stupid thing to be. each dc buildout is wildly different from the next. you'd probably enjoy having several more level3s in your downtown buying up disused office towers. in turn, colossus is abhorrent and should be destroyed. please have some sense

Went to see Odyssey tonight, it was pretty great! I liked that the movie didn't pull punches with making the monsters monstrous, nor with clearly laying the fault for Odysseus's troubles at his feet. The actress for Circe was amazing.

Honestly I'm still pissed that the pedocon party was somehow the one that weaponized the chuds. This was the easiest layup in history, a "kill the pedos" shirt with the picture of trump and epstein palling up is like, the easiest killshot in political messaging that's ever been invented.

White House press pool reports two protesters were kicked out of Trump's rally. One of them was wearing a T-shirt that said "kill your local pedophile."

As someone who recreationally looked for the darker corners of the Internet as a kid, I can't even really laugh at this one. I'm more just jealous of the bubble this person lived in.

I see people saying that Natalie Harp is a disturbed woman who needs help. She is an active and avid climber in the pedophile death cult that is the Trump administration. She doesn't need help, she needs the same thing that all the rest of them do, a gallows.

“And please, when I fail, will you tell me? You have the absolute right to cuss me out, if need be, when I deserve it, because no one knows or cares about me more.” … “With all my heart, Natalie”

Imagine making a list of people who the left should be bullying, and placing "AI user" above "republican". Just another reminder that there exist people who are "left" not because they care about liberal or progressive ideals, but because they want to be the bullies in charge.

I'm increasingly convinced that hating AI has morphed from an opinion on a thing to identitarian groupthink. I say this as someone who hated AI until mid 2025 too. "I'd rather tech people who use AI feel more hostility from me than from the Nazis on Twitter" is not the message you think it is.

Johnny Normality@probgobl.in · 3w ago

"A bunch of people would rather post on Race War Now Dot Swastika rather than Bluesky because you keep making fun of their imaginary computer friend" is a RESOUNDING endorsement for the concept of hostility.

Part of a thread from some bluecheck:
Multiple people I know have told me that they love the idea of Bluesky, and want it to succeed, but have abandoned it for X because the use agentic tools in their work and find them incredibly useful, and feel that any mention of their usage here leads to hate and ridicule.

I wouldn't bring this up if it was just one person, but it was multiple people since the beginning of August who mentioned in passing something to the effect of either "I'd spend more time on Bluesky if people weren't so anti-AI" *or* "As much as I hate to be there all the useful AI talk is on X."

I'm not saying it's anyone's responsibility to praise AI usage. I agree with much of the criticism of the tool. But for many, many people, it is a useful tech (I have talked about the ways I find it extraordinarily useful, only to have people here mock me, insisting my lived experience is a lie).

I am just noting that for all the people here who say that people should get off X and spend more time here, the reason I keep hearing from people in various circles who would *like* to do that, but don't, is the vociferous belief of many here that there are no possible positive uses of AI.

(Quote bc replies disabled) As a professional coder, I used it this last week to quickly patch WoW add-ons that had bugs on the new release version, because I don't program Lua at all nor do I know anything about how the add-ons work, and its been relatively good at that.

It's also kinda weird, because you do see people who don't code or work with spreadsheets using it to get the skills of coders and "spreadsheet people." Like this bike youtuber who's not a developer was able to use Claude Code to reverse engineer a weird ebike controller: youtu.be/hPrtVGimBYs
