Our energy affordability crisis has a hidden driver: utilities spending billions on gas pipelines. But, as @kgeorgebagdanov.bsky.social and @panamaredhat.bsky.social tell @volts.wtf, states are increasingly implementing policies to transition us away from gas to affordable clean heat and cooling.
Today on Volts: as affluent homeowners switch to heat pumps, the fixed costs of the fossil-gas network are born by a shrinking class of consumers who can least afford it. Today I talk with folks from @buildingdecarb.org about how to phase out gas in a thoughtful, equitable way, one chunk at a time.
Bring it on! Doing the right thing? Get charged less!
Massachusetts just closed out its first winter featuring lower electric rates for heat pump owners. Next winter could bring even lower rates — and a few neighboring states may adopt the program themselves. https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/heat-pumps/winter-rates-massachusetts-heat-pump-owners
Gas prices are too high. Utility bills are skyrocketing. Clearly we need renewable energy now. But Gov. Hochul is trying to gut the 2019 Climate Law that would get us there. Instead, she should work to fully implement the CLCPA for an affordable, renewable energy system that works for all of us.
🌤️✨ Energy from Heaven > Fossil Fuel Hell 💀🔥 Yes to clean, affordable energy! No to the hellish and greed-filled oil, gas, and coal energy system! NO CLIMATE LAW ROLLBACKS! Let’s show @governor.ny.gov that New Yorkers are watching! 👀🗽RSVP: bit.ly/3O0Kbve

Yesterday, 500+ NYers flooded Albany to protect the state’s Climate Law from @governor.ny.gov’s changes. Nearly 30 lawmakers joined advocates in calling Hochul out on secret negotiations & delaying getting off fossil fuels that get more expensive by the day.
Happening now in Albany! Hundreds rally to defend the Climate Law, calling on legislators to not gut the Climate Law.
@governor.ny.gov Gas is driving the energy affordability crisis. If we change methane accounting, NY will be reliant on “natural” methane gas for decades longer. We'll waste billions on gas pipes that could have been spent on transitioning our economy. empirereportnewyork.com/climate-acti...
