sorry for no hades stream this week or next gang, I got distracted by this really big hole -R
lrs: One of these days I'm going to post my mega rant that joins up several smaller rants on how people feel entitled to be weird about what others eat, lie to them about what's in their food, sneak stuff in their food, & otherwise mess with their food; all of which I feel should be unacceptable
I grew up in an era where not liking things was called "being a picky eater" or a "food fuss". Which led to just having lists of things one did not like. In particular I did not like condiments on sandwiches or burgers. /1

One of the joys of being a parent is the human interactions with your children, getting to know them as unique individuals, learning their tastes and needs and loving them and caring for them as the irreplaceable people they are. Why throw all that away for expensive glorified autocorrect?
A consistent pitch by the makers of ai wearables is that they solve the problem of getting to know your child. www.businessinsider.com/parents-brea...
I will say this for Bierce, while the Devil's Dictionary has no entries for "Writer" or "Author" (thus shielding himself from his own snark), his entry on Lexicographer contains a a solid deconstruction on the problems of prescriptive versus descriptive definitions: /1

An under-discussed part of John Crowley's career was his documentary filmmaking. THE WORLD OF TOMORROW, his 1984 film about the 1939 World's Fair (dir. Lance Bird) is available on YouTube in what appears to be a clean, complete copy. It's brilliant--smart, funny, elegiac, and very very Crowley.

"What the Mouse Said" The world is big, and I am small I cannot hope to eat it all. I peek, I poke, I prod, I look. Why, even once I wrote a book. But the vast is vaster yet, And I am less for all I get.

When I read Little, Big, I knew John Crowley was a great writer, and one who had spent his childhood in the same big library as me. When he taught my Clarion West class in 1992, I knew he was a great teacher, and a kind man. May his memory persist; may his works survive.

From time to time when I was in divinity school, the professors at the nearby UChicago Divinity School would pose the question: what is religion. The answer was always the same: You can't -- it's too variable
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but the idea that religion is primarily defined in terms of *a set of beliefs about god that you assent to* is an idea that was mostly made up by Protestants and generally does not map very well onto most varieties of human religious experience.

So I've been looking at fashion history with a super fine grain and also saw @trungles.com 's astounding Pride & Prejudice thread and I realized that P&P, revised 1811-1812 published 1813, came out *just* as English neoclassical fashions were getting real fussy 🗃️🪡 #FashionHistory
