Cycling, SAABs, Trains. Bit of everything really. A bit left of Castro

A rare request from me. One of the things I'm involved with is I co-own a small business, selling sustainable catering disposables to the trade and individuals. We're trying to clear a load of old stock. This is niche but would love as many people as poss to see this. singleusealternatives.co.uk

I live in Wales where we’ve banned plastic take-away containers so McDonalds, Costa (which is Whitbread) etc can’t use plastic lids (I’m still not sure how Greggs get away with it). Why can’t they stop using them in England too?

My estate is in for some stuff and I have a 2000 CR-V as a courtesy car. The CR-V must have been one of the first “everyday” SUVs in the UK (the Range Rover was always posh). If they were all like the CR-V, I don’t know how they became popular! It’s like driving a transit, but not as useful!

In the UK, your car insurance premium isn’t based on you. It’s based on what a million people with your job do or 1m people in your postcode or 1m people your age. You could have another year’s NCB but if people with your job have just started causing expensive injuries, your premium is going up.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

Does anybody else struggle with enthusiasm to ride in the heat? I’ve noticed it when I was commuting - I’d ride all winter - dark, rain, windy and then get bored of it in May. Same this year - I’m looking forward to it being cold enough for long sleeves and tights.

One of those #AITA moments for not allowing my son to recharge the battery from his mate’s dodgy Amazon “e-bike”. If he’d bought a Ribble or a Trek or an anything from a company I’ve actually heard of, then no problem.

Maybe doing a century yesterday wasn’t the best idea after not doing any proper rides since my 320km in June. My legs are ok, but my back hurts! Hate being old!

Yes I did! I did go too hard so am now nursing myself home! In other news, I’ve just seen a guy use his 3.0 Turbo Diesel Toyota Land Cruiser (Landcruiser?) to go and get a newspaper. Talk about wrong tool for the job.

I seem to have lost my Garmin (hopefully just temporarily misplaced) which means that today’s 160km ride is completely on feel. Half way in and my legs hurt, which might mean I’ve gone too hard. We’ll find out after the coffee stop!
