🐦 First Ustica Spring School was a success! Our inaugural event brought six researchers together to study #springmigration in real time, thousands of #migratorybirds passed through the island while we observed, learned, and discovered. #Ornithology at its finest in the Mediterranean!

How Do Introduced Parrots Thrive In Cities? "Are parrots competing with native bird species for essential resources or are they living in unexploited ecological spaces?" #SciComm🧪 by @grrlscientist.bsky.social #ecology #IntroducedSpecies #biodiversity #UrbanBirds www.forbes.com/sites/grrlsc...

A recent study has examined whether non-native parrots in European cities compete directly with native birds or occupy ecological roles that are otherwise underrepresented in urban systems:

Parrots establish novel ecological roles in European cities

Research in Italian cities shows that non-native parrot species occupy ecological roles absent from native urban bird communities, rather than simply overtaking them.

Thanks for featuring our work! Across 6 Italian cities (220 point counts; breeding + winter), we find that established parakeets tend to expand the functional trait space of urban bird communities, consistent with filling underused niche space.
