From what I can tell, the "conflict" between DSA and centrist Democrats seems to be "let's try to do something about *gesturing* all this" vs "but I am le tired and that sounds hard."

In June, I submitted a short story to @clarkesworldmagazine.com about a woman whose work mandated she receive an optical implant that becomes infected with malware. Reading the July issue of Clarkesworld, I see a much better story that has a similar plot device. No wonder they rejected it.
"Why isn't my small business succeeding?" Probably because you're charging $20 for an egg roll, my guy.
Southerner here. Can confirm. Local political ads in the South are *wild*. They're often openly racist, full of weird delusions, and then they pivot to blaming all the problems on Democrats who haven't been in power in living memory.
This is deadass every republican campaign ad here in the south. I'm not even REMOTELY JOKING.
One last thing, and I swear I'm done. A nurse at my ER internship told me about what it was like working in the ICU during COVID. Two patients per room, everybody on a ventilator or high flow oxygen.
I remember them burying prisoners at Rikers in mass graves. Hospitals out of ventilators and so swarmed with patients that they were lining the halls. Sikh doctors cutting their hair and Muslim doctors cutting their beards to wear respirators. Nurses wearing trash bags for PPE.
Running out of body bags, using forklifts to transfer corpses into makeshift morgues, a mortician conducting 200 funerals in a month when he usually does 30, crematories running at double capacity… And these senators just want to memory-hole it all www.nytimes.com/2020/04/30/n...
1500 words down today. Darkness encroaches on Rhyolite. Ayorn begs Meg to light the forge. Sigmund turns night into day. The miners are in open revolt against their occupiers.
This raccoon is one mint away from exploding.
Overnight, a masked bandit broke into our kitchen. Armed with opposable thumbs, he proceeded to sample everything on offer. I’d just visited the farmers market, so the menu was extensive. I can now share a highly specific peer-reviewed list of what this particular raider did & did not enjoy. 🧵
A glut of AI-written fiction is drowning out human authors, new research shows. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/28/b...
Please don't skip flu shots. Flu kills thousands of people every year, mostly the very young and the very old, but it can leave anyone with serious complications. It is a dangerous, dangerous virus.
#CDC reports another pediatric #flu death in the 2025-26 season. That brings the number of children who died from flu this season to 188. FluView doesn't say what percentage of those kids were not vaccinated but earlier in the season CDC estimated about 85%. www.cdc.gov/fluview/surv...
Requesting your library acquire copies of a book is one of the best ways to uplift the authors you love.
If you want to read a book and your library doesn’t have it, it is truly a massive favor to an author to request that the library acquire it. It really and truly is
Get my book from a library. Get all my books from a library! If they don't have one, ask them to interlibrary loan it. Or maybe they'll buy it! Any of these things is good. The goodest is that you read one of my books.
Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.
I haven't paid attention to Fox News in a decade, but a patient had it on in their room yesterday. Really shocking how laser focused it is on micro-scale events to push their agenda. The vitriol is so shocking. It's pure hatred, switching topics rapidly to jumble it all together in people's heads.
It is though! McDonald's had tried to implement a pancake bun for a breakfast sandwich for a long time before they figured it out. The syrup would crystalize on the nozzles in the assembly line and clog them. It was a major technical challenge.
the mcgriddle is a miracle of modern technology
I'm still in nursing school, and I have a summer internship at a local hospital emergency room. I'm not qualified to give medical advice. You need to talk to a real professional about your health. With all that said... Don't throw gasoline on a bonfire. Don't do that. Bad things happen.
Me: Wow, sure looks like France is unstoppable. (gong sound)
Me: Germany is out? Weird, they were my pick to win it. Guess I'll have to go with my backup pick. Coworker: Who is that? Me: The Netherlands! (a little later) *Price is Right loser music*
*Laughs nervously in Florida*
With all the July model runs now in, it is very likely that 2026 will see the largest El Niño event since records began in the late 1800s – and potentially by a truly mind-blowing margin. The median estimate is now 3.6C, roughly 0.8C hotter than the prior record (2.75C). www.theclimatebrink....
I go to a warehouse gym to lift weights, and there's a guy who comes in sometimes who brings a portable speaker and absolutely BLASTS the most awful DJ mixes you've ever heard while he lifts. They're like something off of Limewire. Random sirens, baby noises, DJ name call-outs.
I don't drink anymore, but I have a bottle of non-alcoholic champagne in my fridge for When It Happens.
Ok, what is everyone putting aside to drink or eat for when it Happens? I’ve mostly been using it as a repeating excuse to buy the really good whiskey for a while
It feels really bad to need to spread information like this, but with the cyclospora outbreak and the tremendous summer heat, you should know how to rehydrate someone.
Hi. We're in the Age of Diarrhea. I'm a global health expert on helping children survive diarrhea. Here's what to do if you might have picked up cyclospora. 🧵 1. Call your primary care if possible. 2. Take oral rehydration therapy, which isn't just drinking fluids. 1/
Lindsey Graham spent his entire life demeaning others and cheering for murder and death. Speak as ill of him as you want. He won't hear it, but maybe another asshole will, and maybe they'll consider if they want to be remembered like that.
I can now add two issues of a comic book to my collection of books by indie authors that scammed money out of me with terrible products. Honestly, I should probably learn a lesson at some point, but I hope I never do. Some day, one of them is going to be great.
I'm glad I supported an indie author, but it would be nice if, just once, I didn't put the book down within 50 pages feeling like I had been taken by a con artist.
Hmm, can I get an assist from any trans folks? There's a local queer bookstore with a trans clothes closet, and we asked what they needed as donations. They said binders and tape. Are there brands out there that are preferred? Any to avoid? I want to make sure we're getting the right stuff. 🏳️⚧️💙
I kind of wonder if I should start asking young men about this in triage beyond the usual "do you smoke/vape/do drugs/drink/thinking of hurting yourself or others" questions.
"His losses totaled nearly $2M. Feeling like he could not confess the scope of his financial ruin to his family, Thompson texted his therapist, who then contacted the police. Officers raced to Thompson's home and prevented him from harming himself." We are about to see so much more of this.
My fiance is out of town, and we've been having calls at night. Had a dream after the call that she was home, and I got so excited to see her that I woke myself up. Basically, I am a dog.
The Infinite and the Divine is one of the rare examples of genre fiction that crosses the line into just being generally great. It is two immortal wizards having a multi-millennia prank war over a magic rock. It is so, so good, even if you know nothing about Warhammer. Excited for a sequel.
If there’s one question I’ve been asked more than any other it’s this: “Will there be a sequel to Infinite and the Divine?” Today I can answer: YES. Join Trazyn and Orikan as they try to mend their relationship by ruining the galaxy… again. www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articl...
This Switzerland-Colombia match is the Pokemon anime Metapod mirror match.
When I'm watching Spurs play Everton: "Pickford, you rotten bastard, your luck will run out someday. You and your hair gel can't keep this up forever." When England plays: "Pickford is a top 5 keeper, and he's not #5. Mad respect. He's phenomenal."
