A grim irony of the deline of British higher education is the fact that in our capped fee system, Humanities degrees actually subsidised vastly more expensive STEM degrees. The collapse of the humanities has also delivered a mortal blow to the sciences. Dumbfuckery all the way down.

Not to harp on, but since giving up on the idea of “selling out” as a bad thing, apolitical means take the side that doesn’t mess with capitalism. Because for some reason, we think that being milquetoast, middle of the road and getting the bag is better than artistic and personal integrity.

Here’s the thing, I’m looking at all the books I have - too many and yet never enough - and all of them are an opportunity to commune with another human across time & space, to know their thoughts and wrestle with our own. Why would we trade this away in the name of efficiency? Of product?
