One way to make your fantasy pantheon feel weirder and more resonant with mythology is to make them more LOCAL. Gods cannot hear you if you're not at their specific shrine. Not all gods are known to you. Their blessings must be discovered. Not all gods are for you. Their worship is proscribed.

In last night's session of HIS MAJESTY THE WORM, we fought this angler fish with a hand that would put out things we wanted on the shore, then attack us. We gave it a beating, but it swam away. Then later I got eaten by a giant clam.

"Modern vernacular fantasy ideas get read backwards into a text that is perceived as having originated them but which doesn’t really contain them" is such a good way to put that phenomenon, holy shit. I've always wanted to find the right way to articulate that point.

The dungeon's rooms change with the tides of the moon. They open like a flower, growing in angles. When the moon is full, there are new rooms unfolded in the space between. When you enter the dungeon, you might suffer "elf time" and lose hours, days, or years.
