Sipping my coffee ☕️ and thinking about these marvellous Minoan cups! They look so modern it’s incredible to think they were made by Bronze Age potters some 3,800 years ago! Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete. 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo collage shows five cylindrical Minoan cups each with a single handle and a slightly flaring rim. Each cup is decorated with a different geometric polychrome motif as follows:

Top left: on a black background, a central band delineated by an upper and lower white line contains evenly-spaced dark-orange circles. Each orange circle is outlined by a white line. Above and below the central band are swirling white vine-like lines.

Top right: on a black background, a large white spiral on the front of the cup and beside it a dark-orange oval with stylised white petals at each end which looks like a wrapped sweet!

Middle left: a central band of white and dark orange diagonal lines runs around the cup. Above and below the central band are alternating black and white diagonal shapes, the black ones look like shark fins

Bottom left: a central reddish-orange band delineated with a white line. Above the central band are swirling, spiralling white lines against a black background, and below the central band are alternating white and black diagonal lines.

Bottom right: A central band delineated with white lines contains white 's'-shaped diagonal white stripes. Above the central band a row of red dots outlined with white circles. Below the central band a single white line on the black background.

This type of Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware, named after the Kamares Cave on Mount Ida on the Greek island of Crete where this kind of pottery was first discovered. Kamares Ware vessels were luxury items produced by palace workshops at Phaistos and Knossos on Crete. These five cups were excavated at Phaistos and are dated 1800-1700 BC.

It was pointed out to me yesterday while we were eating the pizza I made for dinner that I make pizza SO often, but seldom share pics online. It might be because I don't use a stone or steel or fancy pizza oven, just a basic pizza pan. Nothing fancy. Anyway, here's today's lunch leftovers. 🍜🍽️🍕

Two slices of homemade pepperoni and green pepper pizza on a colourful plate resting on my lap.

Stuck my hand in the oven mitt this morning and encountered a lump. That's odd, I thought. I shook the mitt upside down and nothing came out, so I put my hand in again...and the lump moved. I immediately, involuntarily, hurled the mitt in the air and an enormous moth flew out! 🦋

A couple of weeks ago I finally did a closet cull for everything more than one size off my current fits, and it was weirdly emotional. Like, the company that made those magical dress trousers no longer exists... I can't replace them. But I haven't worn them in two years. Into the bag they go.

Rather than legally requiring platforms to spy on kids (to exclude them from being targeted by platforms' algorithms), we could prohibit platforms from spying on *anyone*, including kids, meaning kids couldn't be identified (much less targeted) by algorithms: pluralistic.net/2026/06/23/d... 5/

After vacation we're always craving vegetables, so tonight's dinner is my version of Seven Vegetables Couscous. I use my own preserved lemons, ras-al-hanout, and extra cumin and pepper for seasoning. 🍜🍽️

A mound of couscous on a blue and white plate, topped with Moroccan-inspired stew of chickpeas and seven vegetables (eggplant, red onion, carrot, cauliflower, zucchini, red bell pepper, and butternut squash).

Now that many people are buying my 2017 metrical verse translation of the Odyssey in great numbers (thank you, Mr Nolan!), or at least, gazing at it and wondering whether to buy it, I thought I should share some thoughts on the cover design.

Hark! A thread for those who seek 🌟Cheap! Kindle! Reads!🌟 Here you'll find EACH of my (self-produced) re-releases pitched in a single post with a link - partly to see if I can, and partly so I have something refer to later on. Sorry it's Amazon, please don't yell at me, etc. ::cracks knuckles::

Mandatory Helados La Valenciana post. But what is the flavour? Mascarpone with a ribbon of tocino de cielo (aka heavenly bacon) named after the dessert of the same name — primarily a thick mixture of egg yolk and sugar. 🍜 🍨

A small cup of high quality Spanish ice cream. There is a thick swirl of golden through the white ice cream. It looks like caramel, but it is really tocino de cielo in pourable form.
