Luxon's "I was out there building a kick-arse business" just galls me so much. Bro you were employed by a couple of gigantic inefficient enterprises. You did not build a pie shop or a landscaping business. You did not build a tech startup.

You did not seek out and hire dozens of kiwi graduates and teach them how to build and run amazing software engineering teams. You did not lay off a bunch of friends in 2015 after learning hard lessons about tech VC funding. You got a pay packet. Get over yourself.

This is framed as a feel-good story, but it should scare the wits out of anybody on the road. Tesla's deceptive marketing is convincing seniors that the cars drive themselves. In reality, a human must always be ready to intervene. If someone lacks the ability to do that, they shouldn't be driving!

The argument that curiosity-driven research should be supported because it reflects an essential part of human nature does not work if you try it on people who lost their essential humanity a long time ago.

This is worldwide. Countries have long neglected their scientific infrastructure, the US is just being a bit more vigorous in its Lysenkoism.
