Criminology master’s student at Deakin Uni working on predictive policing and Deleuze. Thinking about control, theoretical, and critical criminology. I’m new here.

Victorians turn out in massive numbers to denounce Pauline Hanson’s “racism and fascism” — swarming her fundraiser to demand she get out of the state.💥 This should be the greeting she gets everywhere she peddles her hate. Well done Victoria. #auspol

Australia’s eSafety commissioner buried a report (released Friday afternoon) that shows the under 16 social media ban didn’t tangibly reduce teen social media use, and also resulted in parents tuning out of kids usage. We traded our privacy for no reason. theconversation.com/more-than-80...

Me in ArtsHub on destructive scanning for AI training. We probably need to avoid fetishising books, and warehouses full of Max Walker memoirs and WordPerfect For Dummies aren't the Library of Alexandria. But even for non-rare books, destroying them *purely to maintain legal cover* is just perverse.

AI companies are destroying old and rare books: who can stop them?

AI companies are now bulk buying and destroying old books – this is a very bad idea.

I have never been shown one advantage of using AI to write or research. Every single example of someone saying how they find it helpful is accompanied with "But make sure you check it because you can't trust it". Enshittifying your writing and research should not be an aim.

Another one bites the dust. Just *do the work* you lazy poseurs. You want all the laurels of scholarship and publication without the labour.

Being encouraged to use generative AI by university faculty should not be a thing. I understand the push to adapt, but stripping away a little friction in research methods to save some time seems antithetical to the whole process of being there, in my opinion 🤷🏻‍♂️
