#WordWeavers 4/9: What seemingly insignificant object in your story carries a lot of emotional weight? This got me thinking. In my current #WIP, it's in a hospital and lanyards are important. ID passes are armour and access, obligation and permission. #books #writing #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
Roberta Warner
@robertawarner.bsky.social
Fantasy writer of characters who sometimes happen to be neurodivergent. Currently querying my debut (historical fantasy + romance) and drafting the next book (contemporary fantasy). Writes true stories that didn't actually happen ✨
#WordWeavers Sept 1:. What is something your MC desperately wants but would never admit to wanting? He wants connection. Which is a sign of weakness. So obviously not true. #Books #Writing #WritersOfBluesky #WritingCommunity
#WritersCoffeeClub 31/8: How did this month go for you, writing-wise? Two days ago, I'd have said the book was lost in second draft. But maybe it was in its chrysalis stage where not even the book knew what it was. Something is emerging... #Writing #UrbanFantasy #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
#WordWeavers Aug. 28: What's one question you're still trying to answer about your story? Does the elf die? #Writing #WritersOfBluesky #WritingCommunity
#WordWeavers 27/8:Which character would win a trivia contest? Dev (secretly) loves Only Connect, but Cochrane got her nickname for her encyclopedic knowledge of clinical trials so she'd be my top choice for my University Challenge team, for sure. #writing #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
#WordWeavers 26/8: What weather best matches your current work in progress? Current #WIP is set in Bath, England, so...drizzle. It's drizzle in a beautiful UNESCO heritage setting, with Georgian walkways to duck under, but ultimately still just rain. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #CityOfBath
So looking forward to this on Wednesday!

We asked those talented sods speaking at Writing the Occult on 5 September for their favourite handling of time and/or place in books, TV shows or films. @stewarthotston.com went with a few historical tales that really hone that sense of place - read about some of his personal faves in the 🧵⬇️
Update: still struggling. I'm not finding the writing clear enough to follow. Have you read it? Do I carry on anyway? #BookSky #CrescentCity
Just started The House of Earth and Blood. Never read any of Sarah J. Maas before. First few pages were steep but I'm in now...
#AwesomeCharacters Today's award goes to: Most Worried About! My award goes to... <drum roll> Dr Dev Patel🥇 He absolutely thinks everyone thinks he's on top of things. Because he IS on top of things. 100%. No doubt. Nothing to see... #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Welcome to the Intermittent Character Award Ceremonies!👏 Amongst all your characters who gets the superlative? Today's award goes to: Most Worried About! Who stresses out the most people? Please award them!🥇 #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
#WritersCoffeeClub 22/8: Have you ever used a sensitivity reader? No, and I know I'll need a sensitivity reader for my current #WIP (British Asian Gujarati male junior doctor first person narrator) so any tips on finding one welcome! #WritingCommunity #WriteSky
#WritersCoffeeClub 21st Aug ~ What’s a mistake you see a lot of writers make when writing about people with your lived experience? I wrote my first (unpublished) novel driven by the fire of wanting to prove it's possible to write a neurodivergent-coded woman who isn't fixed by love. #WriteSky
Ever check your socks, realise they match and that's how you know it's gonna be a good day? #NDLife #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #KingsOak
The #WIPSnips word for August 20th is "footprint" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Ok but in London we only have drunk foxes and the squirrel mafia so no wonder my manuscript blows
Great writing is bad writing plus time, plus the three raccoons who look into your window and see you drinking whisky and sobbing inconsolably over your bad manuscript, then after you pass out on the floor, they creep in and rewrite all your work.
#WordWeavers 20/8: If your story had a tagline, what would it be? Current iteration: Twelve-hour shifts. Broken hips and chest infections. And a shapeshifting badger-man with an arrow wound to his bum. All in a day's work for a junior doctor. #writing #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #TeamNHS
#WritersCoffeeClub 19th Aug ~ How do you write characters with expertise outside your own? What I need the scene to do comes first - Dev teaches kickboxing but really it's about how punching things makes him feel. I draft with guesswork then fix with research. #Writer #Writing #WritingCommunity
#WritersCoffeeClub 18 Aug What are your limits for writing outside your lived experience? I'm writing outside my cultural experience, simply because that's how the character arrived in my brain. I'm doing my best to address it with utmost respect, and I will get feedback... 1/2 #WritingCommunity
Junior doctor Dev is on a mission to find the pathology department. Tell me you worked in the NHS without telling me you worked in the NHS... #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #TeamNHS
The #WIPSnips word for August 18th is "press" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
This is why I love #WIPSnips - in searching for words, I sometimes come across sentences that epitomise my characters so succinctly, even in isolation. Meet Cochrane. A no-nonsense histopathologist, paradoxically sharp and blunt at the same time... #ActuallyAutistic #WritingCommunity #WriteSky
Welcome to a new week of #WIPSnips! The word for August 17th is "dark" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
#WordWeavers 17. Which scene made you laugh while writing it? #WIP book is funny and I love writing it. Then in edit, I try to make it funnier and it's excruciatingly painful. Like trying to thread a needle with the power of my mind. They are also the hardest darlings to kill. #WritingCommunity
#WritersCoffeeClub 17th Aug ~ How do you tackle difficult issues in your writing? Or do you avoid them altogether? Readers might have experienced similar, or be privileged enough to not have. Research and authenticity matter hugely. And CW so people can choose. #Writer #Writing #WritingCommunity
#WritersCoffeeClub 16/8: How do you keep a character from becoming unsympathetic? My main character is currently too unsympathetic. I hope to soften readers to him in revision by giving clues to what is underneath the arrogance. Any tips on how to do that welcome! #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
#WordWeavers 15/8: What's one writing habit you've developed that genuinely helps? When in the writing bit of writing, I allow myself about 10 seconds to think of a word/phrase - any longer & it gets an [add funny thing] placeholder. I'm holding out hope that revision-me is hilarious 🤞🏻 #WriteSky
#WritersCoffeeClub – 15 Aug. What’s something you recently learned about your own work? My first book was emotionally draining to write, so for this #WIP, I thought I'd write something light & funny. I'm on 2nd draft. Turns out it's about grief, vocation & hiding from yourself. Oops. #WriteSky
Beneath The King's Oak only contains literal spice 😆 This quote follows on from the #WIPSnip the other day. Dev is commiserating with his fellow junior doctor housemate. Everything is better with pizza, in his view... #WritingCommunity #TeamNHS #WriteSky #AmWriting #KingsOak
The #WIPSnips word for August 15th is "spicy" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
A sad one from Beneath The King's Oak today. CW: junior doctor grief, patient death. #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips #NHS #KingsOak
#WordWeavers Aug 12: If your main character had a comfort food, what would it be? If you ask Dev, it's pizza. Quick and simple. Readers know different. Readers know it's ladoo, made by his grandmother and which reminds him of being home and his late father. #WritingCommunity #WriteSky
