The Arctic Circle just reached a temperature that once seemed almost impossible for such a frozen region: above 100°F, or 38°C … a shocking first … fragile regions are rapidly changing. Sometimes one number can tell a much bigger story … climate change is no longer distant. It’s here. It’s now.

Call out for adventurous young birders, aged 18-30* * Don’t make the same mistake that I did by turning up for a Club 18-30 holiday dressed as Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
🧵 The Search for Lost Birds is looking for young, adventurous birders to lead expeditions to find “lost” bird species. Currently, 121 birds lack any scientific documentation for a decade or longer (70+ are entirely missing from the Macaulay Library!) Continued... searchforlostbirds.org

✍️New blog post! An Antidote to the Attention Economy: Building an Intellectual Life jenteottenburghs.wordpress.com/2026/07/28/a... A short post with a few practical suggestions for building an intellectual life in an age dominated by shallow content and endless distraction.
"It is never too late to start a long term monitoring survey, but it is always too early to stop it" I have start a ringing programme on European storm-petrels in 1997 and ring my 30,000 birds this week 😀 #seabirds
Absolutely heartbreaking letter from the mother of Alex Pretti, six months after his murder by ICE agents. How is it possible that we still haven’t seen even a hint of justice for such a heinous crime?
When the story of why humanity didn't stop climate change is written, it will feature front pages like this. Even as the skies blacken with climate change-induced wildfires, right wing media continue their relentless crusade against measures to tackle it.

Celebrating 20yrs Rat free this year! One of the biggest successes on the island is the seabirds, but for Manx Shearwaters it has been phenomenal. One of our box birds from today, the fact we have 15,000 and they breed successfully was unthinkable 30yrs ago!

Embarrassingly disappointing from an institution that has rather a lot of power and every reason/obligation to act as a beacon of hope in an otherwise rather hopeless-feeling situation that we as a global community find ourselves in.
