🔔🔔 Russian polls have shown ~75% support for the war in Ukraine since February 2022, essentially flat. New working paper with Kirill Chmel and @nikitasavin.bsky.social shows that number is stable partly because it stopped measuring what people actually think. 🧵 ssrn.com/abstract=711...

@roelandendtz.bsky.social
PhD candidate in experimental social science at @ipp-csic.bsky.social and @uc3m.es, researching how political norms are maintained between citizens.
PhD students and postdocs in the social sciences: if you're based around Madrid or up for a trip to Madrid, come present at @uc3m.es PAPERSS Seminars! It's a great opportunity to outline your research to a group of peers, receive high-quality feedback and, most importantly, Chinese lunch next door.
Are you a junior scholar looking to present your work to/receive feedback from peers and senior scholars in Madrid? Submissions for the 2026/2027 PAPERSS Seminar Series are now open! 🎉 We are looking for submissions from a broad spectrum of empirical social sciences. Any questions? Get in touch!
If you’re in dire need of some climate optimism (or optimistic news coverage in general), I really recommend subscribing to the newsletter from @fixthenews.com.web.brid.gy. Great reporting on the energy transition, which is the only thing preventing me from dooming out in this stifling heat.
Had an amazing time at EPSS this year and I’m hoping to be able to go again next year. In that light: organising next year’s conference in one of Europe’s most expensive capitals might not be the most accessible choice, especially for early-career researchers and those not based in Western Europe.
EPSS 2026: That's a wrap! 🎊 Thanks to all presenters, discussants, chairs, section chairs, volunteers, & participants for making this conference such a success. Safe travels, and see you at EPSS 2027 in Copenhagen!
Coming Saturday, at #EPSS2026, I’ll present my upcoming research on the determinants of preference falsification regarding LGB attitudes, exploiting random mode allocation in the upcoming ESS Round 12. Phrased in a catchier way: when do people fake being pro-gay? Still in town? Swing by!
🧓🏼 Last seminar of the Spring Series of PAPERSS! Tomorrow at 12:45, Koen Veldman (NIDI-KNAW/RUG) will present his paper explaining how - and why - refugees differ in their remittance behaviour from other migrants, using Dutch survey data. Online access: meet.google.com/nqb-wumt-wzd
Woke 2.0 is going to be huge once generational replacement occurs in some European countries. It’s going to be interesting to see how this will clash with countries where the youth in fact is turning to the radical right (e.g., Spain)
Young Britons have been shifting to the left for a while, but this @yougov.co.uk poll is still exceptional.
Excited to act as a discussant for this really cool paper. Those interested in affective polarisation, swing by!
✨ Another PAPERSS seminar next Tuesday at 12:45, featuring @david-sanchez.bsky.social! He will present findings on how external threats influence affective polarisation, using German and Dutch reactions to the invasion of Ukraine as a case study. Online access: meet.google.com/cma-vsnp-neg
🪻Another week, another Spring Series Seminar at @uc3m.es! Next Tuesday, May 5th (12:45 PM), Abdelkarim Laglil will present early findings of his investigation on migrant responses to hostile local political environments, using panel data from Germany. Online access: meet.google.com/nnc-xbmg-kku
🎉Excited to announce the first edition of our PAPERSS Seminars Spring Series at @uc3m.es! On Tuesday April 28th (12:00 PM), Aitor García (UC3M, CSIC) will present his upcoming paper on women's employment, family formation trajectories & health outcomes. Online access: meet.google.com/gkt-nzvs-cwt
@Junior social science scholars (especially those based in and around Madrid), take note!! A new season is about to start. 😎

I am happy to share my first publication! In this study I show that, in Chicago, the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests led to a reduction in targeted policing, particularly against Black civilians, across all officer groups. Read it here 👇 journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1...

This is probably about the “what’s worse: neoliberalism or fascism?” debate on here today, but if not, it applies to this debate on here today.
3 people with ca. 80 followers say something stupid about politics on here. Dozens of accounts with 10k+ followers pick it up and go “look at this place, it’s the worst, everyone’s so annoying,” collect 100 likes for affirmation and then complain that bluesky is a bubble.

📣 PhD Scholarship Opportunity Applications are now open for a fully funded PhD scholarship (4 years) attached to the project “DE FRANCO A AIRBNB: VIVIENDA, MOVILIDAD Y ELECCIONES” hosted at UC3M (AEI funds). 📌 Deadline is 27 March 2026 and starting date is 1 June 2026: www.uc3m.es/ss/Satellite...
It is just straight dangerous to put up such narratives when you only present average values across 29 completely different countries with different age structures and *DON'T ADJUST* for this.
Gen Z men twice as likely as baby boomers to believe wives should obey husbands
I think this perspective oversimplifies things. The point is that social desirability isn't a concern if 1) a study is conducted anonymously and 2) participants truly believe that it is. In the context of China, the latter condition doesn't hold. Especially not in a study about governmental trust.
A shot in the dark for #academicsky: I am looking for a recurring national survey tracking attitudes on gay adoption/marriage through self-completed/online surveys. Ideally, it would cover years both pre- and post-legalisation. Eternal gratitude to the person who can help me out!
To maintain our democracy, it is said that we should uphold democratic norms. But do these norms really exist among citizens? And do they play favourites when enforcing them? I got to present preliminary findings on this at the Workshop Social Norms in the Political Domain at @ipp-csic.bsky.social.
Excited to present my paper at an international conference for the first time at @epssnet.bsky.social!
One of the dumbest posts, if not the dumbest, of 2025 — and also one of the most damaging, in terms of curbing Dem willingness to lead public opinion on immigration. Look at where that graph is now! Complete failure to imagine how opinion could change in the near future www.gelliottmorris.com/p/data
Seven MPs of Geert Wilders' Freedom Party (PVV) quit the party and start their own parliamentary party group in the Dutch House of Representatives. They refer to the fact that Wilders is the only party member of the PVV and the lack of results. www.dutchnews.nl/2026/01/dutc...
Así es como se comunica que España no participará en Eurovision. Bravo RTVE. Bravo Silvia Intxaurrondo. Una vez más.
Fitting: Dutch governmental news broadcaster NOS announces that it will stop posting on X from today onwards due to unmoderated vitriol. One of the top commenters below their last post, with blackface profile picture, wishes cancer to these “disgusting left-wing cancer fascists.”
Labour is desperately trying to appeal to Reform supporters. In October, we asked people in the UK if they perceive a party as a "party for someone like them". Only very few people say this for both Labour and Reform. The correlation is negative. Labour is chasing an electorate that does not exist.
