the reason i hate ai isn’t JUST because of the environmental racism it perpetuates and the empirically proven cognitive decline associated with its use, it’s also that it’s been forced upon us in a manner so many of us are painfully familiar with: via the ego of powerful, vile and corrupt men.

Arte Moreno bought the Angels in 2003 (the year after they won the Series) for $184 million. He then spent 23 years running them into the ground, let the stadium decay, wasted Trout and Ohtani, and sold for $4 billion. And the owners are crying poverty and threatening to kill baseball next year.

People will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "We won't mind if you look around," you'll say. "It's only $20 per person. Plus you can get $50 in free bets when you sign up for an account."

AOC: Millennials are not punk kids anymore. We're grown adults with mortgages and kids, and that generation is starting to be decisive at the polls. And there is anger at being ignored, having our economic futures mortgaged by the generations that came before us and we're taking the reins

The issue about sports mega-events like the World Cup and the Olympics isn't whether they should exist, but whether they should exist in their current form, as means for extracting tons of money from host cities and delivering it to corrupt oligarchs.

Friday roundup: On being a fan of the World Cup without being a fan of the FIFA World Cup 2026™

Before we start with this week's roundup, a note about the World Cup: I'm enjoying it! The one-game knockout format, even in its dumb expanded iteration, is great for generating drama, and when you mi...

On the bright side, Miami-Dade County got out of paying $400m in Marlins stadium bills in 2009, when it didn't have the money; on the less bright side, it now must pay more than twice as much over the next two decades, when it still doesn't have the money.

Building a Marlins stadium during the financial crisis is about to hit Miami with a tsunami of debt payments

Something I like to harp on here is that news articles that rage against governments still paying off stadiums after they've been torn down are missing the point: How to pay for a stadium, whether wit...

What an absolutely joyless bunch and a sad way to squander the amazing joy and energy of the World Baseball Classic. This team can piss up a rope, and are ample evidence that MLB players should be kept from participating in the Olympics. FOH with this vibe.

So, per the Seattle Times, it's apparently not just Raleigh, it's a team-wide decision to not shake hands. Out of UNITY and SERIOUSNESS. Which is rich given (a) none of Raleigh's teammates came forward to defend him; and (b) his manager is mailing in games because he doesn't know they count. LMFAO

Newspaper excerpt from a Friday evening Seattle Times story: "Arozarena felt disrespected when Raleigh wouldn’t shake his hand prior to his first at-bat in WBC pool play. Per multiple sources, Raleigh had made it clear to Arozarena that he couldn’t shake hands, following a Team USA philosophy agreed upon by the players. But Arozarena attempted a . . . "
