October 5, 1988: Chile votes No on eight more years of Pinochet, 55.99 to 44.01, with 97.6% turnout. One of the people campaigning for Yes that fall was José Antonio Kast. He's been Chile's president since March. Photo: the day after, by Felipe Antonio Valdés

Our call for case stories on Non-Economic Loss and Damage is extended to October 7. Climate loss and damage gets argued over in dollars, and whatever can't be priced (health, culture, heritage, the right to stay in a place) drops out. We want to tell these stories.

Wolfgang Kaleck has no illusions about how strong the law is. He uses it anyway, for Patrice Lumumba's family and for survivors of Assad's prisons. On Sept 30 he discussed his new book, The Power of Law, with Sakiko Fukuda-Parr and Philip Alston at The New School.

Eight decades after the Nuremberg trials against Nazi war criminals, the Trump admin has launched an all-out assault on the International Criminal Court, primarily over the tribunal’s pursuit of Israeli leaders for war crimes committed in Gaza. We speak with human rights lawyer Wolfgang Kaleck.

Our office has been a true believer in reforming the UN Charter to make it actually represent today's world from day one. Last night we sponsored the Article 109 reception pushing that case forward, alongside Helen Clark and dozens of others. The work has only just begun!

Three photos of the event on a blue background with the title "The Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung UN Office was honored to sponsor the official Article 109 reception". And on the bottom left: "Attendees included Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand; Baboucarr Gaye, Gambia's Minister of Public Service; and many others." And

40 years since the UN recognized development as a human right. It has never been implemented. Debt and IMF/World Bank conditions still strip developing countries of the sovereignty to exercise it. International Covenant on the Right to Development, now!

“The book matters because Gaza is still happening. Its relevance is my family’s ongoing danger. I wrote the poems because I wanted people to look and see what was happening.” Palestinian poet and journalist Nour ElAssy reflects on her forthcoming book: buff.ly/kwmmeIx

"Meanwhile Moulton, claiming to represent a break in the status quo, repeated precisely the tired centrist playbook that has both failed America’s multiracial working class and failed to win elections. He punched left and, as Markey himself highlighted, threw trans kids 'under the bus.'"

Mamdani promised public grocery stores as a candidate. Now the city's building five, one per borough. First up this year: La Marqueta in East Harlem and Hunts Point, run through a private operator instead of full public ownership.

Zohran Mamdani speaking at a podium.

When 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won NYC’s mayoral race last year, his election was described as a “political earthquake.” If the metaphor is apt, then the city’s Dem primaries were a series of powerful aftershocks. @nickfrenchnyc.bsky.social has analyzed the results for us.
