Wow! If the side length of this "Sierpiński triangle" is 1, the average distance between its points is 466/885. Double wow! The average number of moves in a shortest path between two random states in the n-disc Tower of Hanoi puzzle is asymptotically (466/885)·2ⁿ as n → ∞. (1/n)

A Sierpiński triangle. Take an equilateral triangle, divided it into 4 smaller equilateral triangles, removed the middle one... and then repeat this procedure on the remaining 3, and repeat forever. What's left is a fractal with measure zero.

Sad to hear that Alan Hale passed a few days ago. Dr Hale was the co-discoverer of the widely observed Comet Hale-Bopp which peaked in 1997. The photo shows Alan Hale (left) and Bill Bradfield (right) -- 20th century's most prolific visual comet discoverer (18 comets). 🔭 #comet

Over 200 people of all ages were present at Adelaide University on 24 June 1997 for a public lecture by Dr Alan Hale -- co-discoverer of Comet Hale-Bopp. After the entertaining talk, Dr Hale (left) presented a copy of his book "Everybody's Comet" to Bill Bradfield -- the 20th century's most prolific visual comet discoverer (18 comets).

In general relativity, a point mass just sitting there is inevitably a black hole. But that's when you're living in 3d space (and one dimension of time). In 2d space, a point mass creates a less drastic singularity: a 'cone point'. I've been studying these cone points lately, just for fun. (1/n)

A disc with a slice cut out of it, and then the cone formed when you glue together the two edges of the slice.
