![I was recently struck by the above video posted to Instagram by Jen Brister, a British comedian. While she is not someone that I turn to for political activation, her animation re-invigorated something in me which I am hoping to share with all of you. In the video she describes a sense of global overwhelm, an overwhelm which I certainly feel, which might make us want to look away from genocide in Palestine, and our general epoch of global chaos. I would like to share her words with you, because they have woken me back up, and I think someone reading this might need that, too. She says:
“WIth the closure of the borders in Gaza famine is coming. And what they want is for people like me to give up. To make it so impossible that we think there’s nothing more we can do. We’re just going to have to let those people die. But we will not do that. We will not turn away, and we will not take a step back. We’re going to take a step forward and we’re going to say to Israel ‘fuck you’. The resistance continues and we’re gonna keep people alive. […] Please don’t disengage […] because we have a shared humanity and we owe it not just to those people in those countries, we owe it to ourselves to keep our humanity, so that’s why we keep going”.
Disengagement is the point of regimes and systems that overwhelm us, they give us too many fronts to fight on so that we become diffused and unable to access communities who care about the same things that we do. But what we - including you - can do, today, right now, is focus on one thing at a time. Below the WIWL collective has organised two opportunities to continue resisting and keeping people alive. Maybe it’s just the Humanities professor in me, but let it be noted that events of today (ahem) have demonstrated the value of being able to assess a large volume of qualitative data and do careful textual analysis with deep attention to context.
