ADDENDUM: As #nzpol nerd @norightturnnz.bsky.social reminded me, that Royal Commission? Reform advocates had been lobbying for that Royal Commission for over a decade before the Fourth Labour Government delivered on a tepid election promise in 1985. MMP wasn't some act of nefarious backroom whimsy.

The truth is that it was almost a decade between the report of the Royal Commission into the Electoral System in December 1986 and the first MMP election.
