Our current “pick-one” plurality elections don’t highlight the areas of agreement that unify us, but rather incentivize candidates to beat down their opponents and exaggerate differences. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀!

Why don’t more independents run for office? In a word: "spoilers." Our choose-one elections discourage independent & third-party candidates from running, & discourage voters from supporting them. Ranked choice voting would solve the spoiler problem, and give voters more choice.

In the European view, the fact that Donald Trump could be elected president twice and still command over 35% popular support after engaging in depraved, reckless and corrupt conduct is stark evidence of long-term institutional disintegration inside the US. The country is no longer a desirable ally.

How does ranked-choice voting work?

This year's election represents a major test for ranked-choice voting in Minneapolis. Thirty-five candidates are competing in the most hotly contested mayor's race the city has seen in 20 years. Under the city's ranked choice voting system, also called instant runoff voting, voters choose up to three candidates and rank them -- first choice, second choice, third choice. We will never be able to have more than two dominant political parties so long as our voting is based on "first past the post". The two dominant parties know this and that is why they oppose ranked choice voting. It threatens the political duopoly by distributing power across the will of the people.
