As Rod Liddle has died, I notice this column I wrote in 2019 about his attacks on people with M.E. is on the most read again. Rebekah Brooks, of News UK, described Liddle today as “provocative”. In reality, he spread lies about very sick people for cash. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Rod Liddle vilifies disabled people. I’m tired of the hate. We all should be | Frances Ryan

Whether it is ME patients or another target, huge swathes of the media have normalised hatred of minorities for years, says Guardian columnist Frances Ryan

I love how everyone just says they get dopamine from something when they basically mean they enjoy it but want it to sound a bit clever. But, you know, I hear that keeping a personal tally of your own neurotransmitters might require a lab and some technical staff which is tricky.

I enjoyed the Stewart Lee bit where he pretended to be Rod Liddle eating poppadoms and just stood there making crunching noises with odd pauses for about twenty minutes. Does that count as saying something nice about Rod Liddle? Cos that's all I've got.

I sometimes visit online consumption communities that fetishise distraction-free writing devices or mechanical keyboards. Then I remember that the best, most prolific writers I know use knackered laptops with missing keys that are held together with gaffer tape and accumulated toast crumbs.

Ah, so when you have your phone nicked and you log into whatsapp on a new (but actually really old) device, it logs out all of your secondary devices and deletes your chat history on those too! Zucktastic!!!

I remember, when Russell Brand was doing his revolution cosplay, his fans would often tell me, "You don't like him because you're jealous about him sleeping with lots of women". They've obviously gone quiet now but at the same time I have no recollection of anyone I ever knew liking Jared Leto.

When I was a gardener, I found out that the company also had the contract for parts of Hampstead Heath, and I seriously considered a transfer. Then, one of the guys I worked with told me that he worked there and I asked him why he transferred to Acton. His answer? "Fuckin' Bill Oddie"

I really enjoyed The Odyssey. I also enjoyed Emily Wilson's hatchet job of it in the LRB, but it's ended up being the conduit for the inevitable deluge of middle class culture vulture contrarianism and all the "I'm too good for this" tedium it entails.

In other news, I was angry about Meta using a David Bowie song for their latest AI propaganda video but then I realised the song was Five Years, which is ultimately about needing human contact in the face of imminent extinction.

The biggest highlight from all my active years on Twitter was when a tweet of mine got two likes but those two likes were from the Natural History Museum's senior researcher in human evolution and the bass player of Joy Division.

www.theguardian.com/cities/2026/... One distinctive thing about the Elephant social cleansing project was that there was no hipsterfication phase. They eyed the real estate, bulldozed the Heygate and then the shopping centre. Right-to-buy flat owners were forcibly evicted by the police.

I keep looking up the clock and thinking, "One hour until the school run" and then realising that it's not only the summer holiday but that my youngest has just finished primary and I never have to do the school run again. Other parents were expressing their happiness about this but it makes me sad.

My wife visited the Cannes film festival when she was a student. She ended up attending the premiere of Dunstan Checks In. I only found this out after we'd been married for about ten years. There's no Orangutans in The Shining or Pyscho so they just can't compete.

It's so much more fun when Ireland qualify for big tournaments. There's a few hopeful moments but it ultimately ends with a 6-0 drubbing from Spain but it's all a laugh and the fans find a way to go home happy. Whereas there's nothing that fun about supporting the country of my birth.

England are losing, and John Stones is down injured. The camera cuts to Mick Jagger. Guy Mowbray says some pre-scripted thing about "He won't be feeling much satisfaction." YES BUT THERE'S A PLAYER CALLED 'STONES' DOWN INJURED. MOWBRAY! YOU HAD ONE JOB.
