In the late 90s I read a grimly bound tome about HTML and began my journey wandering this abyssal plane. Otherwise found offline in Brooklyn. https://www.ryanswaney.dev/

Aaron Swartz, coding prodigy and hacktivist who helped develop RSS and was a co-founder of Reddit, died by suicide after facing $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison for felony charges, just for downloading pdfs of research papers with the intention of making them accessible to the public.

Being GenX/Millennial is such a trip. In our lifetimes, we saw people our age getting wild criminal penalties for pirating music and now have to sit and watch as companies gobble up our work with impunity.

Once again, I absolutely ADORE tying my work and livelihood to commercial applications that insist on hiking up their prices to cover their own 'investments' in generative AI features and infrastructure that I will never, ever use!!!

There's a meta-point here, which is key: Commercial AI tools are built for bosses. It's very obvious, and very simple. This manifests in every part of their design and implementation and use, and it's no wonder they cause burnout.

Interesting research in HBR today about how the productivity boost you can get from AI tools can lead to burnout or general metal exhaustion, something I've noticed in my own work simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/9/a...
