I am happy that there are voices within Academia in Europe that are willing to defend the civilian nature of the HORIZON program during this warmongering reality that we are living in.

Every machine in a Hospital that diagnoses your body without cutting you open is based on a principle of Physics, discovered by a Physicist who had no interest in Medicine. If you think the world doesn’t need Basic Science, or that somehow Science has failed you, think again. #sciencematters
In my latest column for @thenewworldmag.bsky.social I discuss the mixed legacy of James Watson. I have something longer in the works on this. www.thenewworld.co.uk/philip-ball-...
James Watson's bigoted beliefs can't be neatly separated from his science
As was often the case before our villains became cartoonish, Watson’s flaws were complex

📢 Check out our new paper on the Electrochemical Ni-catalyzed functionalization of tropones for a neat combination of #DFT and #spectroelectrochemistry towards #tropone condensation with the aldehydes. #compchem pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
Electrochemical Nickel-Catalyzed C(sp2)-H Functionalization of Tropones with Aldehydes
A direct electroreductive functionalization of tropones employing aldehydes as alkylating agents is reported. This C(sp2)-H functionalization process leverages the mediation of electroactive nickel complexes, enabling a wide range of both native and substituted tropones (44 examples) to be alkylated selectively at the α-position in high yields (up to 90%). Combined electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and computational analyses disclosed the whole mechanistic pathway and revealed the key role played by reduced Ni complexes in activating the tropone core toward condensation with the aldehydes.
