Pistachio Recall expanded outbreaks due to
Salmonella
Pistachios from Iran have been identified to be contaminated with salmonella. This was originally announced in July, but over the last two weeks Health Canada has recalled 84 additional products either of raw pistachios or those containing pistachios. Only pistachios from Iran are impacted. There is a temporary restriction of imports of pistachios and pistachio-containing products from Iran as a precautionary measure. Because pistachios have a long shelf-life, some of these products have been circulating since
October of 2024.
If you have pistachios originating from Iran at home, please throw them out. If unsure about origin, err on the side of caution. At restaurants or already prepared foods, ask about the origin of pistachios before consuming.

Not every illness is 'the flu' and yes, you still need a flu shot even if you do have the real deal 'flu'.

Influenza 2025 - what you need to know

New strain
H3N2 is one of the strains that is included each year in the flu shot. However, this year we have seen a very rapidly spreading evolved version, with seven mutations. Early estimates suggest that the flu shot might not be a good match. In general, H3N2 tends to cause more severe disease, hospitalizations and deaths particularly in the elderly and the very young.

Early start
Typically flu season tends to ramp up in December and peaks in January/February. However, we are seeing an early start in many countries in Europe and Asia. In Canada, while we are still under the 5% positivity threshold, we did see a doubling in percent positivity from last week - cases are increasing rapidly.

Anticipating high number of cases
Due to the mutations and the early start, we are likely going to see yet another year of record cases and subsequently hospitalizations and deaths. The southern hemisphere also had two back-to-back brutal influenza seasons. We are also anticipating similar impacts in Canada and the US.

Still important to get a flu shot
While the flu shot may not be a perfect match, it will still provide some benefits particularly in preventing severe illness. New data published by the UK HSA this week shows the 2025-2026 vaccine is 70-75% effective at preventing hospital visits in children and 30-40% effective in adults.

Other ways to protect yourself
This would be a good time to begin masking in indoor spaces. Also, extra precautions to protect elderly, children, immunocompromised and pregnant people.

The good, the bad and the ugly on the current measles situation in Canada. Measles outbreak in Ontario finally declared over. New cases are slowing down in all provinces, with only a handful of new cases in Alberta and BC in the last month.

MEASLES OUTBREAK IN ONTARIO FINALLY DECLARED OVER
The last reported measles case in Ontario had rash onset on August 21, 2025. A measles outbreak is declared over when at least 46 days have passed since the rash onset of the last case, accounting for the 7-21 day incubation period, delays in reporting, and potential for undiagnosed cases. This was met on October 6, 2025.
However, given Canada has had over 5000 cases of measles in 2025, it means we will likely lose our measles elimination status. Canada achieved measles elimination in 1998.
