i see millenials talk a lot about the literacy crisis in young adults and kids, but the amount of times my middle-aged coworkers haven’t read through the email i sent (oftentimes carefully curated to be less than like 6 sentences) because AI has rotted their brains is staggering and infuriating.

Made myself a set of little wallet cards with an adapted version of trigger/freakout management exercises from therapy to keep in my various bags and desk drawers so I’m not remembering everything from scratch when I’m in a bad way

Mags’ hand holds five bifold wallet-sized leaflets1. STIMULUS
What literally, observably happened?

2. STORY
What do I think or fear it means? How strongly do I believe this is true?

Persistent or recurring feelings are usually secondary emotions about the story! Stories stop them from resolving.

3. FEELINGS
What are my emotions?

4. ASK
• Is there evidence for or against this?
• What is the larger situation? What is left out? What is minimized or exaggerated?
• What is the source of this belief? Is it reliable? Does it come from experiences in a different situation?
• Am I confusing the feeling of fear with proof the danger is present? Am I trying to protect myself by mentally acting out how I'd feel if someone hurt me?
• What feelings are about the present?
What feelings are about the past or an imagined future?
Look out for: all-or-nothing thinking, catastrophizing, discounting the positive, mind reading, labeling (I'm a loser, they are unsafe, etc.), blame or self-blame, fixating on proxy issues, wanting to control outcomes5. REFRAME
How else can I think about this? How much do I believe the first story? How much do I believe the reframed story? How am I feeling now?

Looking Beyond

Past: Is this bringing up old stuff for me?
How can I care for those feelings? Have l felt like this before? How did I get through it? What could I do the same or differently?
Present: How are my physical needs? Are there other stressors right now? What can I do to support myself, in this moment or in the bigger picture of my life?
Future: Is there something I can do to make this situation easier if it comes up again? Is there a hurt or fear I can make a plan to address?

a good silent hill thing is full of imagery that ties back to the story symbolically but a great silent hill thing should also feature some stuff that feels like it makes sense but is a couple of layers of abstraction too far to make a one to one allegory and leaves you going what the hell was that
