Oooohhh, that's a good one. Yeah I could see can openers becoming a grandparents thing.
I wonder if the internet and the freezing/constant (re)cycling of cultural periods means that it goes away. DVDs would be a good one except young folks are embracing physical media. Maybe it’s a kitchen item—like a can opener.
The phone call thing is a good one, I think! I think it'll be more of a Boomer thing than a Gen X/Millennial thing, but definitely the only people my kids ever get calls from are their Boomer grandparents. Maybe older Gen Xers, too? My older brother definitely likes calls more than I do.
Maybe things like calling people to actually talk on the phone? Nostalgia for things like videos and DVDs?
I'm thinking less about candy, specifically, and more stuff that we associate with our grandparents and only our grandparents, you know? A bowl of hard candies or getting a birthday card with a $5 bill in it are such stereotypes of our grandparents that it's become a shorthand for us.
A lot of Gen Xers and even some elder Millennials are grandparents by now. I'm so curious to know what the Werther's Original of our generations will be.

What do you think the Werther’s people are going to do once the Silent Generation finally passes completely from the world?

one of my all-time favorite disgruntled reviews of THE ODYSSEY long precedes the movie & comes from my partner. His take: “Odysseus is a shit sailor. There was very little ocean to cross to get home”
Hello Oakland folks, let's chat about book bans and how we can ALL fight against them!

I really appreciate the number of PDX bumper stickers that endorse crying.
Every time one of those "1 like=1 answer" things go around, I am reminded of how everybody else seems to find it completely non-paralyzing to identify a favorite book or list their top 5 movies
Tbh, anybody that spends more than an hour or two talking to me deserves a medal 😅
I know some people are jealous of my relationship with @sakeriver.com. But it takes work. You try navigating a conversation that went protein shakes > Judith light > kundalini yoga > Jack black > queer erotica.
Partner and I were just talking about Who's the Boss? and I was thinking about how the whole comedic premise of that show is that there's a man working as a housekeeper for a woman boss.
I think we can all get behind this, yes?
Eat shit, Max Miller.
I wonder if I were to watch an episode of Mr. Belvedere right now, whether I would find it funny or entertaining at all.
Cover reveal Ebook preorder towards the end of the month(ish) No print preorder b/c KDP doesn't work that way (sorry)

Hello, friends. It’s been a long time coming but there’s finally a new episode of #HeyItsMe. In this one, recorded back in November, Rachel and I talk about the messiness of grief, and about making art out of life. www.heyitsmepodcast.com/episodes/epi...
I usually say this in a flippant or self-critical kind of way, but when I think about it, adult friendships do need routines and activities. It's why stuff like bowling leagues or pickleball or D&D nights are important. And why the loss of third spaces has been so devastating.
All my podcasts are really just me trying to trick people into being my friend for an hour at a time
It really feels like every single one of my friends is going through it right now and for whatever reason my thought about that is "What if I made a podcast where I invited my friends to talk about how shitty everything is" instead of "What if I called my friends more often"
It appears that about a month ago, for reasons I cannot begin to fathom, 108 different people downloaded the third episode of Hey, It's Me, an episode that was posted two years ago and only got like 40 downloads in its first month.
I know one of you wants to review “Strange Hybrids: Science Fiction, Literary Fiction, and the Contemporary Novel”
Calls for Reviews & Essays: November 2026

my absolute dearest friend’s life fell apart after she moved abroad and she is raising money to start anew. I’m sharing her GoFundMe if anyone has some money to pass her way; she and her sweet elderly dog could use some love. thank you in advance. ❤️🙏✨
