I love the international discussions here on topics like how a word is pronounced across the planet, where someone says "Glumly? That's pronounced the same as cholmondelay" and I am no wiser but I am entertained.
Means testing is slower, more expensive, more demeaning, and less effective than just giving stuff to everybody who asks for it.
Hope they figure it out soon
Little help? I'm trying to find the article that quoted engineers at various Musk firms on their practice of designating someone to distract him with some made up problem to prevent him from interfering with their work.
So, this "curing cancer" thing will have to wait to feed the word salad generator. https://www.engadget.com/2225849/google-shuts-down-alphafold/

Man charged for using phone's 'duress' password to wipe data
The U.S. Justice Department is prosecuting an American man for allegedly providing U.S. border authorities with a passcode that wiped the contents of his phone, a case believed to be the first of its kind in the United States where federal prosecutors have charged someone for the alleged destruction of data using a "duress" password, as first reported by TechCrunch.

[grousing about AI/LLM offending me personally] well, it finally happened to me: an unattended github account submitted a pointless, stupid change request to MY PERSONAL WEBSITE I had hoped that none of my repos were important enough to be bothered but […] [Original post on infosec.exchange]

Every time I report an account, I worry that I do it too often/too lightly and I’m annoying my moderators, but then I remember that I’m in the top 0.1% of active fedi accounts and the fact that I report rarely enough to perceive them as distinct events is a pretty good sign for mastodon/fedi overall
“We are sorry but your civilisation has not met one of the Galactic Commons membership criteria. We will return next rotation to reassess you.” “Oh, Darn. Was it the wars? We could stop—well, try to.” “Alas it is more serious; the single planetary paper size requirement. We admire your A […]

I blew off some meetings and went hiking in an incredibly beautiful spot. (Saskatchewan is so flat! Except where it's not.)
🔋 MIT just published the most comprehensive EV emissions study yet, analyzing every US zip code with real driving data. Battery EVs cut lifetime emissions 40-60% vs gas cars in most locations. Even on the dirtiest grid in the country, they still come out ahead. The study used DOE's GREET […]

Another example of why I don't believe AI is going to replace humans. The automatic captions should read "Globe and Mail journalist Andrew Coyne"
My best friend is still in the workforce and nobody is more surprised by that fact than I am. His daily mantra is "Don't just be part of the problem. Dream big! Be the whole problem." #Wisdom #OldPeopleOfMastodon
You are absolutely right! I should not have injured a human being or, through inaction, allowed a human being to come to harm!
From CTV today: “I feel sorry for Americans,” said B.C. Premier David Eby. “If you can’t be friends with Canada, then you almost certainly do not have a friend anywhere in the world. “And that is a very lonely place to be.”
I’m not sure I understand the mindset of someone who signs up for a social media account and then gets surprised and upset when they find people discussing *current events*.
I did a test in Romania, #meshtastic vs #meshcore and here is the quick summary: Over 250 Meshtastic nodes found, compared to 70 Meshcore nodes. BUT Meshtastic was basically dead, no one talked, or answered anything. I only got one message with the […] [Original post on social.linux.pizza]

Of the food borne illnesses in the news I wondered what happened to good old fashioned ptomaine poisoning. Why isn't anyone getting the dreaded ptomaine poisoning any more? Ptomaine is a generic term for decomposition products like cadaverine and putrescine, which are not particularly dangerous […]

Somebody tell the Americans that we adjusted the wind a bit, and ask if that's any better?
So... I buy cars new and drive them until the wheels fall off. It looks like my 2nd car ever (I'm 61), a 2001 Prius, has had its wheels fall off in the form of brakes no one can get dealer parts for, and no one is willing to put eBay parts on. And we can't afford a new car. Sigh. Communauto / bus.
