Escape From Ever After is definitely the MOST Paper Mario of the Paper Mario-likes. Also probably the best? The game's premise recognizes that much of what makes golden age Paper Mario funny is how it lovingly subverts what you think you know about the Mario world. Great game to kick off 2026. 4/5

All you need to know about Promise Mascot Agency is that it's a management sim card battler set in a Showa era town that you chaotically barrel through in your winged truck. The Yakuza influence is clear, but it would be insane to accuse this game of lacking originality. Bewildering and perfect.

The First Berserker: Khazan is more Niohlike than Soulslike. It makes some clever tweaks to the formula, but is weak on vibes. Fascinatingly bland script delivered by an extremely talented voice cast. Also: too hard. A rare DNF, for me.

I will play better games this year, but none will make me smile like Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. I always reach the end of these games surprised that Ryu Ga Gotoku managed to sneak a genuinely moving story into a funhouse of evil idols and underdog taco salesmen. They did it again!

Citizen Sleeper 2 is like if Disco Elysium wasn't funny at all. The prose gets a little purple, for my liking, but that's probably inevitable in a game with so many transcendentally beautiful moments. Can't make an omelette etc etc. I highly recommend it to people who like Books.
