i don’t dispute this, but (to an outsider at least) US popular culture has contributed to a representational skew—there are Jewish characters in most of my favourite teevee shows! if i didnt think too much about it, i might assume the average USian knows more Jewish people than i do

I am always trying to explain to folks that most Americans have never met a Jew and people do not believe me and I just need you to understand that the perception that we are a powerful group in this country is intentionally created by antisemites and you’re unknowingly buying in.

I appreciate this perspective, but do think some friction is essential to learning. Sometimes you need to encounter a new context and try to make sense of it in its entangled complexity, rather than isolate the appropriable elements for your own context.

These last two sentences are key and explain so much. The people I know who are genuinely thriving from AI use are people with natural intellectual curiosity. Instead of outsourcing thinking, it removes friction to acquire new knowledge.

Is this an after-effect of our leaders and institutions all but giving up on addressing climate change--accompanied by very obvious, everyday reminders that the change is real and substantial and affecting us all? Is it displacement of something big like that? I honestly don't know.

It doesn't appear to be correlated with prices, with partisanship or party control, with income, with employment. Some force acting on our society constantly underneath all of this stuff, spanning all these boundaries, making us increasingly pessimistic.

I definitely understand being resentful that capitalist deaths are ascribed to nobody whereas communist deaths all belong to specific leaders but the way to change that is to hang a death toll on Musk, not to pretend Mao doesn't have one.

Reading The Black Prince by Iris Murdoch for the first time and I can't stop thinking about this:
