This dog is tragically unaware that her period of not having to share the couch with me is coming to an end. She's going to be devastated.

History of modern philosophy, neo-Kantianism, sustainable transport, vegan tacos.
The history of western philosophy is easy mode for this. Descartes, MEDITATIONS ON FIRST PHILOSOPHY Locke, A LETTER CONCERNING TOLERATION Kant, CRITIQUE OF PURE REASON Wundt, LOGIC Camus, THE PLAGUE
alright let's do real discourse: five books *by bad people* that are still good or great books V.S. Naipaul, A BEND IN THE RIVER Allison Pearson, I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT Kevin Myers, WATCHING THE DOOR Yukio Mishima, CONFESSIONS OF A MASK Neil Gaiman, BRIEF LIVES.

Interesting question for left-wing political parties in the Anglosphere: If there's a Jason Statham movie about it, can you make it a winning issue?
i think the death penalty should only exist for phone scammers
I'm reading Russell's Leibniz book carefully for the first time, and it is full of absolutely wild interpretive claims. "Charlie Brown had hoes"-level exegesis.
"I think we’re clearly in the midst of a tremendous measurement failure." This is incredibly good.

I appear to be stranded on Vancouver Island indefinitely because of the West Jet cabin crew lock out/strike. To West Jet cabin crew: You guys are great and deserve to be paid for your work. To West Jet: Pay your employees, you jackasses! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???
The next Emily Wilson? My 87 year old father says Nolan's Odyssey is "three hours long" and "awfully loud."
Musical illiteracy has gotten so bad that, now, almost all mainstream music journalism is written by cultural studies and English majors who don't know anything about *music*.
Post your hottest music take. Mine is New Order is better than Joy Division.
The reason the world immediately became bad after E*MO*TION came out was that the forces of darkness could not abide Carly Rae Jepsen - and, in turn, Canada - to become the global unitary superpower, and so They burned it all down

Hard not to be excited about a Colson Whitehead-Graham Yost-Barry Jenkins collaboration.

Dear China, Thank you! If it's not too much trouble, can you please keep stabilizing energy markets at least until I can get a heat pump? You guys are the best! www.theatlantic.com/economy/2026...

America’s greatest rival is single-handedly averting a global energy crisis. No one knows how the country is doing it—or why.

Garfield has the appearance. But I think Adam Driver better embodies the intense weirdo vibe you get from most Neurath stories.
I think Nolan’s Neurath movie should cast Andrew Garfield as Neurath
I finally went to see the new Christopher Nolan film and I was disappointed. the film made no mention whatsoever of Leibniz's response to Bayle's pessimism regarding the problem of evil. also the costumes were historically inaccurate for 18th century Europe. worst adaptation ever.
My insurance company, which refuses to sell me more insurance for hurricane season, just sent me some spam about "coping with climate anxiety." I would like to cope with climate anxiety by buying more insurance, please!
Guy whose major explorations of Big Ideas include "What if Dick Cheneyism was cool as hell?" and "Occupy Wall Street, but also somehow fascist." The guy's just not that bright!

Imagine a talented Chinese director who made an epic, awesome Chinese adaption of MOBY DICK, even though he didn't speak or read a word of English. He based his adaptation entirely on Chinese translations. Who wants to say that director is an EXPERT on Melville's text?
Not QTing because I don't want to start any beef, but: This isn't true, and by the standards that Wilson takes for granted, Nolan is in fact a dilettante. And the ugliness is in refusing to acknowledge the decades of concentrated study it takes to achieve genuine academic expertise in a text.

This is the crucial point that Starmer knows, and it's been the key to his impressive political successes.
Tom, suburban, college educated women are scared of “boys in girls sports”. Not arguing it, but that’s what polling shows. Same with runaway DEI and open borders. Again, not gonna argue, that’s just what reality is. If Dems stick to those things, independents and mod Rs are lost, again.
Near the Canadian border and just heard BC's 96.9 (nice) say they were broadcasting from unceded territory before playing Tiffany then ZZ Top, and honestly, while Jack FM isn't the last place I'd expect to do a land acknowledgement, it's not the first place I'd expect either.
Emily is a genius; I am extremely, genuinely thrilled for her! But also: as The Odyssey sells out books and theaters alike, Classics departments and language classes are being decimated across the US. If you want more Emily Wilsons we have to FUND SCHOLARSHIP and FUND TRANSLATION AND TRANSLATORS.
“A Penn professor thought she’d sell 1000 copies of her ‘Odyssey’ translation. She sold a million this year alone, thanks to Christopher Nolan.” “West Philly's Emily Wilson, who penned a highly acclaimed translation of the epic poem in 2017, is having a big summer.”
I don't work at an R1, but otherwise: yeah, this is me. Translation is for after I'm promoted to full professor.
And folks may not realize that even profs who have both the expertise to take on this kind of translation project and are otherwise installed in an R1 Uni. may not get much, if any research “credit” for producing such translations. Even w/in depts/fields, it isn’t rewarded.

i don't think it should be *illegal* to publish books in three-column format but i do think we need a version of mandatory parental advisory warnings for it
