I appear to be stranded on Vancouver Island indefinitely because of the West Jet cabin crew lock out/strike. To West Jet cabin crew: You guys are great and deserve to be paid for your work. To West Jet: Pay your employees, you jackasses! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???

I finally went to see the new Christopher Nolan film and I was disappointed. the film made no mention whatsoever of Leibniz's response to Bayle's pessimism regarding the problem of evil. also the costumes were historically inaccurate for 18th century Europe. worst adaptation ever.

My insurance company, which refuses to sell me more insurance for hurricane season, just sent me some spam about "coping with climate anxiety." I would like to cope with climate anxiety by buying more insurance, please!

Imagine a talented Chinese director who made an epic, awesome Chinese adaption of MOBY DICK, even though he didn't speak or read a word of English. He based his adaptation entirely on Chinese translations. Who wants to say that director is an EXPERT on Melville's text?

Not QTing because I don't want to start any beef, but: This isn't true, and by the standards that Wilson takes for granted, Nolan is in fact a dilettante. And the ugliness is in refusing to acknowledge the decades of concentrated study it takes to achieve genuine academic expertise in a text.

"also while clearly Wilson has devoted more time and talent to the Odyssey than Nolan, Nolan has now devoted more time and talent to it than all but a handful of people in the world; I think a kind of ugly thread running through the conversation is that a filmmaker is necessarily a dilettante and: no"

Near the Canadian border and just heard BC's 96.9 (nice) say they were broadcasting from unceded territory before playing Tiffany then ZZ Top, and honestly, while Jack FM isn't the last place I'd expect to do a land acknowledgement, it's not the first place I'd expect either.

Emily is a genius; I am extremely, genuinely thrilled for her! But also: as The Odyssey sells out books and theaters alike, Classics departments and language classes are being decimated across the US. If you want more Emily Wilsons we have to FUND SCHOLARSHIP and FUND TRANSLATION AND TRANSLATORS.

“A Penn professor thought she’d sell 1000 copies of her ‘Odyssey’ translation. She sold a million this year alone, thanks to Christopher Nolan.” “West Philly's Emily Wilson, who penned a highly acclaimed translation of the epic poem in 2017, is having a big summer.”

i don't think it should be *illegal* to publish books in three-column format but i do think we need a version of mandatory parental advisory warnings for it
