Currently watching The Last Action Hero and realising that one of the incidental joys of older films - made redundant by CGI and face replacement tech - was spotting the brief moments of stunt men stand-ins during fast-cut action sequences, as in this scene where Charles Dance is yanked off a chair.

A shot from the film. A widescreen image of Charles Dance, in a white suit holding up a knife, ready to throw. The next shot. A widescreen shot of a man dressed as Charles Dance also holding a knife, being pulled from the chair.A zoomed-in close-up of the same man who is clearly not Charles Dance.

Yes lockdown was really tough for kids. Lots of those kids are teenagers now so maybe as a thank you our establishments could stop deliberately making even more things worse for them due to a weird systemic hatred of our own youth

When schools were locked down during Covid, our daughter was one of the people interviewed by The Guardian about how lockdown was adversely affecting teenagers’ mental health. She was part of the group whose GCSEs were cancelled. It was a fair and sympathetic article, focusing on the teens' concerns

Turned on a channel on my TV to find a film I'd never heard of called Accidental Love, with a pretty good cast. Looked it up to find out it's a 2015 David O. Russell comedy, originally called Nailed & co-written by Al Gore's daughter, later disowned and then released under the name 'Stephen Greene'.

A shot from the film. James Marsden as a cop with a moustache. Jessica Biel, presumably with a nail in her head somewhere.A shot from the film. Jake Gyllenhaal with a terrible haircut.

Currently reorganising my paperbacks and came across my TNT collection - aka the wildest, most ridiculous and over-the-top men’s adventure series ever published. Let the synopses give you a taste of what’s inside:

A series of seven paperback books, all with black covers, all with varying illustration of the same man’s face - holding a gun, a knife, a hook etc. He is extraordinarily chiselled and rugged. Anthony Nicholas Twin vs. The Black Widow
Six of the richest men in the world. All dead. All had been married to the same mysterious woman. A woman so elegant, so deeply sensual, no man could resist her. No man, except of course, TNT.
But when the deadly seductress traps TNT on a mirrored bed suspended from a helicopter high over the Empire State Building-the man with the uncanny sexual prowess has to make a crucial decision-become the black widow's new mate or end up as a grease spot on Fifth Avenue...
TNT
It begins beyond anything you have ever experienced before. Meet Anthony Nicholas Twin.
He goes all the way.
And then keeps going.
In the wilds of Paraguay is hidden a legendary city of sex and gold. For centuries its citizens have lived in peace. But now the fanatical Torquemada is stealing their treasure to finance his scheme to become the worldwide Napoleon of Terrorism.
TNT's choice: infiltrate Torquemada's fascist killer corps by surviving their incredible suicide training. Or watch the only human he loves, sweet innocent October, subjected to the most hideous torture ever dreamed of by animal or man!
TNT
It begins beyond anything you have ever experienced before.Anthony Nicholas Twin in a battle for blood
Eleven people. All with the same rare blood type. All dead. Butchered and bled by international terrorists.
One woman. The only possible donor left in the world. Frozen-her body rests in a secret cryogenic laboratory in Hungary.
TNT is about to enter a living, breathing hell of staggering proportions. A Kingdom of Death-where blood runs cold and hearts cease to beat at the push of a button. It is a nightmare
world that leaves TNT only two choices-kill with razor-edged precision...or end up as a human popsicle...

Finally found a cheap(ish) copy of this. It’s undeniably polemical and occasionally too discursive but a work of forensic detail and controlled fury. Astonishing that Landis ever worked again – and didn’t go to jail.

Outrageous Conduct: Art, Ego, and the TWILIGHT ZONE Case

STEPHEN FARBER
and MARC GREEN

A rare week in which my last four are all new movies. My favourite of these was Is God Is, a highly stylised revenge drama, though I also enjoyed a lot of They Will Kill You, even if it isn't as good as Kirill Sokolov's previous two, Why Don't You Just Die! & No Looking Back. #lastfourwatched.

A screengrab of a Letterboxed Recent Activity screen. It shows the films They Will Kill You, Is God Is, Over Your Dead Body and The Sheep Detectives.

I'm teaching (for the third time!) my 10-week course on how to work on your ideas BEFORE you start the grind of writing, it's been a huge amount of fun the last 2 times we did it, with all kinds of surprising & amazing stories coming out of people. Starts Sept. irishwriterscentre.ie/courses/grow...
