Your review reminds me of how much I love this film. Decades ago I was a lonely expat living in London and I was at a party where I didn't know anyone. Another person there engaged me in a conversation about The Apartment and then we loudly belted the theme music together. I felt better after that.

Even reading your review brings tears to my eyes. I saw it for the first time 18 months ago, and have seen it once more since, on the big screen. Having deprived myself of it for the first 50 years of my life, I now declare it my favourite ever movie for the remainder of it.

I absolutely adore you.” The greatest of all Wilder’s great films: a story of becoming a mensch, and of sacrificing oneself – beyond all reason – for love. To do that, producer-director Wilder (co-writing with I. A. L. Diamond) takes all manner of outrageous gambles. Who else would dare hand us a hero who spends the first act with a head cold, social climbing at work, or let us overhear his love interest vomiting up her sleeping pills? Yes, I re-read a few of the Guardian columns yesterday, and the 'look at my naughty joke' style is simply lumpen. He occasionally produces an unusual and apposite metaphor but generally it lacks craft, charm and wit. Which is a limitation if seeking to persuade. Which I guess he wasn't.

The thing I find fascinating is that we are being told he was actually very pleasant, which two things, we'll have to take you wrod for it as you were one of six people he was nice to and also if he was capable of this, that makes his whole persona even worse that he was actively choosing this!

It's my brother's birthday. Here he is last year, elated at receiving colourful pants. All he ever wants is his dinner, yazoo milk shake, pom bears and bright pants and socks. There you have it, the secret to a happy life.

Lewis Goodall is one of the better and more reflective political journalists we have, and his interest in the lives of working class kids is sincere. It’s just sadly true that a lot of people who’ve been lucky enough not to experience disability and chronic conditions can’t envisage the reality.
