The 2026 spring survey campaign of the Spanish Common Small Mammal Monitoring Programme (SEMICE) has now come to an end 🐭🌿 Small mammals play a key role in food webs. Yet, despite their importance, this group has remained relatively understudied in Spain over recent decades.

How much do we really know about small mammals in agricultural landscapes? A new study presents new distribution records for small mammals from central Iberia, helping to fill important knowledge gaps in one of the Peninsula’s most widespread environments.
The Egyptian mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon), the only mongoose species found in Western Europe, continues its expansion across the Iberian Peninsula. New camera-trap records have now confirmed its presence in La Rioja
The data behind the MOMAT Project are now openly available through SECEM web. Six standardised datasets bring together mammal records collected across Spain and detected through non-invasive monitoring methods (camera trapping, pellet analysis and track surveys). 📸: by macrovector / Freepik (mod.)
🦊🤝 Could different carnivore species cooperate? New evidence may suggest an intriguing association between the red fox and the European polecat in central Spain. During a camera-trapping survey in the Madrid region, Miguel Ángel Sánchez captured a remarkable sequence of images and video.
On 22 May, SECEM will take part in the event “Threatened Biodiversity in Spain” at the Spanish Congress of Deputies, organised to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity. 🇪🇸🦊
Often, the final result means we pay little attention to the journey behind it. Yet sometimes that journey can be just as fascinating, or even more so, than the destination itself. A new paper in Galemys offers a perfect example.
📢 Save the date! The 17th edition of the Iberian Wild Ungulates Meeting (RUSI) will take place in the Royal Site of La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia, Spain) on 2–3 October 2026. 🦌🌲 This year’s theme: Managing today to conserve tomorrow: animal health and regeneration of the Iberian forest.

1/ Domestic cats are among the most common pets but when allowed to roam freely, they can pose serious risks to biodiversity, especially in protected natural areas: predation, disease transmission, and even hybridization with closely related species like the European wildcat.
Sofía, capital de Bulgaria, acogerá un interesante congreso internacional dedicado a la conservación de los pequeños mamíferos. Este evento, que se celebrará del 21 al 25 de septiembre, forma parte de las acciones que desarrolla el proyecto LIFE for Falcons smcc.habitatfoundation.org
