The W is up to 366 games lost due to knee injuries this season. Since the start of the 2023 season, 1284 of 3318 games lost have been because of knee injuries. No other body part has caused 500 cumulative games lost. And these numbers are very likely underestimates because of insufficient reporting.

Just in from the Fever: Damiris Dantas has a torn meniscus in her left knee. She underwent knee surgery yesterday and will miss the remainder of the 2026 WNBA season.

This study is a textbook example of statistical significance not meaning clinical significance. The "small spikes" equated to a couple minutes. I'm confident saying these "small spikes" were ultimately meaningless. It's also the problem of using linear statistics to explain nonlinear dynamics.

NBA players’ Achilles tendon tears are linked to small spikes in playing time, study finds

The injury is one of basketball’s most serious. A recent study found that players logged more minutes than their season averages during the 10 to 15 games before their Achilles tendons ruptured.

My bias when evaluating athletes is that since it's functionally impossible to actually improve an athlete's instincts/reaction times and speed, if they grade out poorly in these domains, either stay away or consider early position changes to mitigate any potential negative consequences.

Most of what we think of as "instincts" are just functional reaction times. Determining how to legitimately improve reaction times, speed, and agility (and get those improvements to stock beyond transient improvements) are the holy grails of player dev, particularly at the pro level.

I think there's a misunderstanding about how much communication occurs between a team's sports science staff and front office/coaches/player dev/athletes/etc. I've spoken to multiple sports scientists for multiple teams in multiple leagues. It's a lot less than you'd think, on average.

Having an entire MLB season cancelled would be so devastating to the sport and to the owners pocketbooks. Zero chance the entire season is lost. They decided to play through a global pandemic for God's sake because they were so concerned about their bottom lines.
