Our flight from Seattle to Sacramento was delayed by a few hours last night, but we were rewarded with an epic sunset on Tahoma (Rainier) as it poked through the low stratus layer. The pastel peach backdrop was made possible by the horrific wildfire smoke from all the PNW fires.

Stratovolcanonpops out of clouds and is bathed in sunset warm peach glow.

I keep trying to read things that are in Norwegian as I plan this trip. I don't know Norwegian. But between speaking English, studying Icelandic now, and having studied German in the past, it looks enough like something I should understand that I keep trying anyway. Linguistic uncanny valley?

I finally figured out where specifically those faults in the fourth photo are! www.google.com/maps/@60.562... They're part of the Hardangerfjord Shear Zone, which is mostly ductile with smaller brittle faults like these. It has a more brittle extension (the Lærdal-Gjende Fault) further to the NE.

Me: I should sleep on this flight because I stayed up until 4 AM playing music. Norway out the window:

Today marks one year since the most recent eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula started. Magma is still flowing into the system at Sundhnúksgígar at the same rate it has been for a while; really interesting to see how this sequence has been evolving.

In 2024, someone identified what looked to be an impact crater located about 100 km north of Magpie, Quebec, as seen in this image from Google Earth. Researchers recently confirmed it was in fact a 390-million-year-old meteor crater — never before identified.

Got an email reminding me that my flight to Oslo is soon. I'm going to Reykjavík first! That's not in the title! IMMEDIATE FEAR! Remembered I booked the RVK part as a stopover in Iceland, not a separate destination. It's fine! Shades of the 2024 air travel hell spiral are clearly still with me.
