All the projections I've ever worked with predicted an acceleration in the rate of global warming if we continued to increase our emissions. The fact that so many people are shocked about this honestly surprises me. I guess no one ever reads things like the IPCC or National Climate Assessment 🤷‍♀️

A figure I made for NCA4 about 10 years ago. The world was tracking the RCP8.5 scenario equivalent emissions through about 2020, and that's the temperature change we're seeing today.

Best way to use purpleair.com map: click on the gear icon at upper left and choose "US EPA" in the "Apply Conversion" setting, or else readings will be too high. Also uncheck the box "show inside" to avoid seeing monitors located indoors, which have a black circle around the colored dot on the map.

Great for Mack, but also shows pure dominance of Jesse Owens. 0.4 seconds works out to about a 4m gap between between gold and silver. That’s a country mile in sprinting.

Aug 5, 1936: Mack Robinson (Jackie Robinson's older brother) won the silver medal at the Berlin Summer #Olympics 90 years ago today. The Pasadena athlete "finished second behind Owens, crossing the line four-tenths of a second after the gold medalist." www.jackierobinsonmuseum.org/learn/storie...

The latest @ecmwf.int seasonal forecast paints coastal California with >8 inches above normal precipitation from December–February. That would be about 170% of normal for San Francisco (~22 inches). This is just a computer prediction, but El Niño may have an outsized influence this winter. #CAwx

Worth emphasizing: *every* good geochemical or geochronologic estimator has a controversial history. That is a big part of what makes it *good*. The arguments are the traces of us figuring out the chemistry & physics of the estimator, & usually mean we can do more with it than originally thought.

Newsom has done a lot of shady stuff while in office, but working with utilities to limit liability for fires their equipment caused (usually due to poor maintenance or some other form of negligence) is just a major betrayal to the people he’s supposed to serve. www.latimes.com/business/sto...

Utilities threaten action if lawmakers fail to cut their wildfire liability risk

Top executives of California’s two biggest utilities warned they would take action to protect their shareholders if Sacramento lawmakers fail to pass legislation limiting their companies’ liabilities ...

Shuang Yang—Chang’e 7 will land near the Moon’s south pole Shackleton crater later this year and deploy (via tether) a seismometer that is planned to survive for 8 years. This might be the first node of a long-lived *international* geophysical network! #AOGS2026

A photograph of my notebook showing a sketch of Shuang Yang (Chinese Academy of Science) talk at AOGS. It shows a low, oblique shot of the Chang’e 7 lander, landed on the Moon, as it lowers its seismometers (SP + VBB) to the surface of the Moon from the bottom of the lander. The seismometer will survive up to 8 years through use of an RHU.

Ralph Lorenz—Huygens showed that Titan can be wet, even at low latitudes. As Dragonfly flies across Titan, the odds it’ll land in mud are low (<1%), and if so, the stickiness will be again to sticky wheat dough (and Dragonfly could still takeoff). #AOGS2026

A photograph of a sketch in my notebook summarizing Ralph Lorenz’s talk at AOGS2026. The pen and pencil sketch shows two spacecraft on the surface of Titan: Huygens and Dragonfly (loosely to scale). The two grey spacecraft sit on a rock littered orange surface with a yellow hazy sky behind them. Next to Hogan’s, I have a zoom in the regular showing how the acoustic sensor suggested that the soil was damp, with liquid sweating out of it. On the right, I show a little insect of some reel, analog dunes, which very rarely can have intradune lakes form in particular particularly rainy seasons. Situations such as this are predicted to be very rare for Titan, but the Dragonfly mission is planned to handle it.

For the 0-2 followers here who have ever wondered what the ridge traverse segment between The Ramp and Mt. Williwaw is like, here is my trip report from Sat. It is 2.5 km of Class 3/4 gendarmes on top of the ridge for 2 hours, or a 3-hour, side-hilling suffer-fest below the ridge. 0 out of 5 stars.

Wow. This is getting pretty sketchy. The Alaska Division of elections used outdated data to justify removing a bunch of citizens from the voter roles and given the opportunity to fix it they were just, like, nope.

Anchorage Daily News@adn.com · 2d ago

The Division of Elections will not immediately restore over 3,000 voters to the state rolls, after it moved them to “inactive” status based on outdated information regarding their citizenship status. www.adn.com/politics/202...
