Sentientism

The Sentientism worldview is "evidence, reason and compassion for all sentient beings". Simple yet radical. https://sentientism.info/ https://www.youtube.com/c/Sentientism https://apple.co/391khQO By: https://bsky.app/profile/jamiewoodhouse.bsky.social

And the reason dehumanization is so dangerous? It's because of how we think about nonhuman animals. Our anthropocentrism. Our human supremacy. Our casual derogation, objectification, vilification. Ending those via @sentientism.bsky.social will help us end all the intra-human discriminations too.

"Metaphors that identify other human beings as pests, deadly animals, reptiles, parasites, disease, filth, zombies, or demons, are extremely dangerous rhetorical devices. As the case of Charlottesville also shows, such metaphors have a powerful impact on human thinking."

Anthropocentrism, even our obsession with the human, doesn’t just destroy our ethics. It warps our epistemology too. So many debates about the nature of reality are trapped into circling purely human psychological and sociological conceits. Forever marvelling at ourselves.

If your first questions, when you come across the #Sentientism worldview, include: - “Who or what do I worship & submit to?” - “Where do I fit in the hierarchy?” - “What should I believe?” - “Am I allowed to leave?” Your expectations may have been shaped by other worldviews.

We can’t do ethics only with values. They’re not enough. We need facts too. That means we need an epistemology. Better make it a good one! One driven by reality. To give us the best shot of understanding reality. So we can make reality better.

One of the darkest, but most important things to learn about human psychology, sociology, disinformation and power, is how decent people can end up supporting terrible things being done to other sentient beings, both human and not. Not just in history, but today.

A workshop w/12 yr olds today: Me: "Why should we care about humans?" Kid 1: "Because we're human." Me: "But what is it about being human that means we matter?" Kid 2: "Because we're conscious. Because we can feel." We matter because we're sentient beings, not because we're human beings.
