We’re looking for Data Scientists to help merge historical & realtime data in service of predictive modeling for aid needs and enable decision support for our ops and admin teams to improve “just in time” aid distribution.

Build our data pipeline & infrastructure to connect and correlate data from across our toolchain. This will enable other tools to utilize each other’s data, as well as allow us to provide personalized donor impact reports (think “Spotify wrapped” for your humanitarian contributions).

Expectations:
Volunteer commitment: ~5h/week
Work in a team: Collaborate at our weekly tech hangs & monthly sprints
No previous OSS experience neededWe’re looking for Backend Developers to work on our Strapi API. You will build production infrastructure for data processing, storage, and query operations. Data modeling is great, but it doesn’t matter if the infra isn’t reliable!

No previous OSS experience neededWe’re looking for Fullstack or Frontend Developers to work on our website. You will build experiences that showcase our operations through rich-media impact stats and reportbacks, drawing more donors, in-kind donors, and frontline aid groups into our network.

Our website project sits at the intersection of software, logistics, data, open source, and disaster response. It offers modern technical work with visible human consequences: better systems can help aid move faster, with less waste, to people who need it.

Deno is down, and my CI is stuck. These problems shouldn't exist in a content-addressable digital space. Downloading by a location (domain name) is an outdated approach, given the availability of powerful cryptographic primitives (hashes and digital signatures).

Blacksky is building ~the intercommunal net~ where communities create virtual spaces collectively managed by their members -- from moderation policies to recommender algorithms. We're hiring a Founding Engineer (Rust) @ $180K base who will report directly to me and lead our atproto implementation.

Most of the editors that render Markdown input on the fly in the same editor (for example, hide inline code span backtick) are complete crap! Don't do it, it's not an improvement! Nobody needs it, nobody asks for it!

In the epoch of automation and AI, we definitely need UBI. However, we also should pay people when they learn something new and pass exams. We will need many more smart people, and learning is hard work; it has to be incentivized.

One of the many problems with AI (LLM) coding is that generated code is usually more complicated than a good software engineer would write. I know that I can try to adjust my prompts, but sometimes it's easier to just write the code myself.

Results from the Basic Income for Artists scheme in Ireland were published in September, and they showed the scheme was a huge success across every metric. I spoke directly with some of the recipients to get their thoughts on the scheme and how it could be improved moving forward.

How basic income benefited Irish artists

Ireland introduced a basic income scheme for artists. It had huge benefits for their art, their mental health, and the economy.
