There's a genre of post on Threads structured like this: ___ [some complaint about a kind of writing] Meanwhile: [screenshot of some writing that poster thinks of as QED counterargument] ___ ...and inevitably, the writing is gruesome and overcooked. Every time.

Illustration from a good bit ago of Ezekiel's valley of dry bones. Client declined to use, and went with another idea. Target demographic: teens. I feel like teens would probably dig it but teens' parents might not, and the client (whose initial idea this was) is pretty beholden to parents.

Overlaying are three comics-style panels showing a process. 1) a mysterious mist/goo/power lifts a skeleton and enters through its mouth; 2) the skeleton begins to grow muscles as it is restored to life; 3) in the midst of the goop we see a person (hair nicely parted) emerging, whole and no longer a mere skeleton but now a super-powered skeleton covered with Skin. Her eyes are closed so it's anyone's guess what's in there.

I have found one good argument for a later date (~1840) for Ishmael's voyage on the Pequod (namely New Bedford surpassing Nantucket as Whaling Central, when by the late '20s it was only just catching up), but I thought I'd accidentally found a second...

Today's churchdoodle is Arizona's State bird the cactus wren. I was going to do Idaho, but theirs is the mountain bluebird, which I did last week for Nevada. And Montana's I did when I did Oregon. And Utah's is the California Gull, which pisses my 6yo off but which I think is cool

Favourite film hard mode: no letter 'e' in the title, released in an odd-numbered year, lead actor only two degrees of Kevin Bacon max.

Nice week for games. Agricola with a friend on Tuesday and 6p Fallen Angels last night. (We lost pretty handily on Fallen Angels bc it's haaard.)

Fallen Angels is a co-op deduction game whether you balance reason against faulty information to prosecute 1920s Australian criminals. As a team of prosecutors, you've got to land 12 convictions before acquiring 4 acquittals. While we've figured out a couple great tricks, our best game so far has been 7 convictions and 4 acquittals, a solid loss.

In your hand, you pick out cards that match one of the icons on the current player's card. What you see and what the player see differ slightly.

Cards where you see two icons will only show one to the player, and cards that show you one icon will show two to the player.

There is a divider card for assistants to use where matches go on the ✅ side and non matches go on the ❎ side. In this case, the assistants hand is nearly useless bc she had no matches AND the only information I got were two icons, so I couldn't know which single icon she was seeing on each card.

We just saw The Odyssey and it was pretty cool. I loved the horse. I went to the bathroom and came back and they were running away from giants and I didn't know who they were. I really only had two complaints: a) it was friggen loud; and b) it was pretty colorless.

I wish these memes would skip the "Hard Mode" stipulation and just say Please Be Interesting, which is what I think they mean but thinking of a film/book/whatever that's not among a tiny handful of hypercommons is pretty easy

The real problem with this wonderful book is that it reminds me of what I push down every day, namely that I long to live in the midst of heavy nature but it's been nearly twenty years since my body could manage that. And so with each page I grow a little sadder.

Comics take. If you're afraid to use thought bubbles in your comics, you're afraid of comics. Getting rid of interiority, something comics have a ready tool for conveying, is getting rid of one of the primary means by which to make your comic meaningful.

It's funny that despite their similarities (preachers playing golf with drifting believers and fretting about their souls), I adore Kevin Huizenga's "Jeepers Jacobs" and really do not enjoy John Updike's RABBIT, RUN. The hinge is that Glen Ganges is nice and Rabbit Angstrom is an ass.
