we fucking loved it, even when there was basically nothing on it, and let me tell you something else: we loved it because of human connection, human diversity, human creativity. WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE THING ANY OF THESE COMEMIERDAS HAVE MADE AND TRIED TO SELL US IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT INTERNET.

i especially love all the dopes saying “when the internet first went mainstream everyone hated it too” like it happened in the pioneer days so no one can dispute it, like mf’ers we were THERE

The number of times as a children's bookseller I had to thread the needle between a kid whose eyes were lighting up at my recommendations based on their stated preferences and the (paying) parent who clearly wanted me to be recommending LITTRACHUR from the adult lit stacks

Ill never forget the parent who told me in absolutely devastated tones that their kid (who was first in class) read comics for their leisure time and they should read real books Me: its leisure time. Let her be a kid, darn it.

2. Don't criticize their choices. Whatever they're reading - comics, fan fiction, non-fiction, even books by celebrity writers whom you may have good reason to dislike - let them read. Books with problematic content? Use them as an opportunity for discussion. But don't shut down their reading.

1. Make sure you're doing it yourself. Kids read most readily when parents read. Seeing the adults around them reading, hearing them talk about what they're reading, is often the best way to engage their interest.

Jim Henson would have been 90 (yup, you read that right: NINETY) years old today. You can celebrate his life by celebrating creativity, diversity, peace, imagination, and silliness.

A tuxedoed Jim Henson sits in a sea of Muppets.

Happy 90th to Jim Henson (posthumous). It’s safe to say that he as someone whose lifetime scarcely overlapped with mine did more to shape my worldview than many of the adults in my immediate life. Be kind, sing songs, be a little weird, make someone wonder how you did that today.

word friends I need help! Isn't there a fancy, like, Greek- or Latin-derived word that basically means an empty thing that we as people pour meaning into??? I may be explaining this poorly.

ooh, I like this take - all the elements are present, so call it what it is: not liminal (which was never quite right, tbh), but gothic for a new generation of people who don’t remember why we built that shit in the first place, or what it was supposed to be *for*

also a shoutout to @shirachess.bsky.social's excellent essay about Backrooms and the Institutional Gothic, which you should read!! thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/backrooms-an...

“When I was small,” said Frog, “my mother and father and I went out for a picnic. On the way home we lost our way. My mother was worried. ‘We must get home,’ she said. ‘We do not want to meet the old Dark Frog.’

A flashback to Frog as a child, lost in the woods with his parents. His mother looks worried, and Frog looks scared.
