After nearly a year of casual meetings during which our talk was light, he appeared one evening to be in the deepest gloom which someone made worse by clapping him on the shoulder and saying, 'Come on, old chap, it's not so bad as all that.' He left his beer on the bar and walked out. Next day and on several occasions later, in the dairy and the street, he shunned me and he stopped coming to the Edinburgh Castle.
I saw him by chance in a dark corner of another pub and, distrusting myself for breaking his chosen solitude, I went to speak. I need not have been doubtful. He was pleased and said I was the only person he could talk to and yet he had not wanted me to see him as he was. He had been avoiding all the places and the people that he knew. He had reached a stage of depression which makes me think of walking on the Cairngorm moors in early winter on the heather, before the snow but after the flower has withered into dead paper, when the leaves can no longer be described as brown, grey or green but as a dull mist with no end to it. You do not know which way to take on the moors; they lie in ridges before you and as you climb each ridge you expect a view from the top. You know there is a warm and lively village very near in the green Spey valley and that the snowy mountains are not far away, but when you reach the top of each ridge all you see betore you is another one, the dreary same. In your agitation you reach a pitch that even to feel calm is an achievement enough in itself without mental or physical activity

In Camden Town in the 1980s and 90s I was, on and off, insubstantially present; working, walking and otherwise. David Thomson’s diary of the place and its preceding layers of time, is an acute, melancholy performance of noticing and memoriality, a mortal mirror, an anti-nostalgia, of passed worlds.

The tower was finished. When we went there it looked bleak and foolish, like a monument to a disgraced hero, a folly built for some cancelled celebration. However, we dutifully filled it with furniture, with kittens that the children had found in a hedge. We made it work, because we had money. At home, in the shabby, dying house that my father had set us up in, the past was never entirely forgotten. In the tower there was only the future. We abandoned it, saying we would return in the summer. In the meantime we employed women to keep it clean, as one might employ cleaners for a sepulchre in which one hopes to rest, at some distant date, in peace.
