The Pitch: Dry Creek Animal Shelter’s cat care coordinator, Esther, is 3 things: very straight, very Mormon, and very best friends with Vee, the kennel manager, who is none of those things.

I remember looking up to say “Thank you,” and tripping over the words when my eyes connected with the amused curiosity in her own chocolate brown ones. “You’re so pretty,” I blurted instead, surprising us both.
She blinked a few times. A low rasp of a laugh escaped her.
“Or maybe—sorry—not pretty.” It was too feminine a word. She radiated a sort of confident androgyny and… “symmetry…you’re face is so symmetrical,” I corrected for some reason, zeroing in on the perfectly centered dip in her lower lip.
She smiled with that lip then and it took up her whole face, making her more radiant, more dumbfounding. “Thanks, kid,” she said.
It was important that I correct her immediately. I was not a kid. I was 19 years old, my life nearly a quarter of the way over, and my name was Esther.
